- Bodie Island Lighthouse - Structurally, Bodie is a twin to the Currituck Beach Lighthouse at the northern end of the Outer Banks. The Bodie Island Light Station is uniquely painted with horizontal black and white stripes, which historically helped mariners identify the lighthouse and today helps capture stunning photographs!
One of the most exciting activities here or at any lighthouse is climbing it. There is a climbing season, which conveniently aligns with the visitor season. The view from the top is truly breathtaking.
-
Cape Hatteras Lighthouse - As the tallest brick lighthouse in the country, the Cape Hatteras Light Station features a striking black and white candystripe design. If available, climbing the lighthouse is a fun activity. Visitors can also see where the building was relocated from as tidelines continue to rise. The lighthouse is often the first to face hurricanes threatening the coastline.
In the vicinity, the towns of Hatteras and Buxton are worth exploring, and the Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum offers a few fascinating hours. - Cape Hatteras National Seashore - Stretching approximately 70 miles south of Nag’s Head, the Cape Hatteras National Seashore is largely natural and occasionally wild, offering a beautiful drive to explore. While enjoying longer sections of undeveloped land, visitors will pass through seven small towns, including Rodanthe, Avon, Buxton, and Hatteras Village. The area features impressive lighthouses at Bodie Island and Cape Hatteras. This drive offers a wonderful day out with spacious open beaches, providing a less crowded experience than the northern towns. Beachcombing for shells is highly recommended.
- Corolla - This marks the northernmost point of the road on the North Carolina Outer Banks. Beyond where the pavement meets the sand, visitors can explore several attractions, including the Currituck Lighthouse and historic buildings like the lightkeeper’s residence. From a more opulent era, the Whalebone Club was once a lavish duck hunting lodge. The protected waters of the Currituck Sound are delightful, and the Whalebone Club is an excellent spot to enjoy them.
- Duck - Among the towns north of Kitty Hawk, Duck boasts a true town center atmosphere, unlike the others. It’s worth exploring and taking a leisurely walk along the waterfront boardwalk, which extends into the water in several places.
- Fort Raleigh National Historic Site - In the 1580s, an English colony was established at the north end of Roanoke Island. It lasted only a few years before the colonists vanished without a trace, and to this day, their fate remains a mystery. Visitors can explore the site where their fort stood, learn about their lives and disappearance, and watch The Lost Colony, the longest-running outdoor drama in America, which offers a dramatic interpretation of the events surrounding the mystery of the failed colony.
- Jennette’s Pier - Among the three excellent piers extending into the Atlantic Ocean along the Outer Banks, Jennette’s is perhaps the most famous, located at Nag’s Head. Rebuilt three times, the last in concrete, the pier is perfect for a short stroll or fishing. Fishing equipment and bait are available on-site, and there’s a small aquarium too. Across from the pier is Sam and Omie’s, a beloved OBX tavern/diner known for its decor, food, and tradition, originally serving as a breakfast spot for fishermen.
-
Jockey’s Ridge State Park - The sand dunes and their unique environment are surprisingly captivating, with two areas to explore at Jockey’s Ridge. The Visitor Center, accessible from the Croatan Highway, features a boardwalk through the low dunes, but visitors should also experience the sand firsthand.
Additionally, the Jockey’s Ridge Sound Access location offers the best of both worlds, allowing exploration of the dune environment and access to lovely sound-side beach areas for cooling off. Further exploration may lead to more secluded spaces. -
Roanoke Island - Roanoke Island, located on the sound-side of Nag’s Head, offers numerous attractions. Manteo is a charming waterside town with a historic ambiance, featuring galleries, stores, and dining options. The boardwalk is a magnet for those seeking a relaxing end to their day.
Further along the island, the North Carolina Aquarium on Roanoke Island provides an excellent outing, especially on rainy days. Other notable experiences include the historically restored Island Farm, the beautiful Elizabeth Gardens near Fort Raleigh, and the National Wildlife Refuges Visitor Center for planning adventures.
Lastly, there’s the Mothervine, a unique plant worth a brief detour during the tour. - Rodanthe - Situated in the Cape Hatteras National Seashore, Rodanthe is the most recognizable of the three intermingled towns, including Waves and Salvo, and Avon further south. The drive to Rodanthe is uniquely beautiful, featuring long and impressive bridges, with beach sand occasionally encroaching on the road. The area is popular with surfers and kiteboarders, and the Chicamacomico Lifesaving Station celebrates the brave individuals who risked hazardous seas to rescue those on distressed ships.
- Wright Brothers National Memorial - On December 17, 1903, in Kitty Hawk, the Wright Brothers achieved four successful powered flights, proving that mankind could conquer gravity and fly. Visitors can stand on the very ground at the memorial or walk the exact flight path from that historic day. The memorial and visitor experience is a must-see highlight when visiting the Outer Banks.
