Yungang Grottoes - The local tour guide will be waiting with a sign displaying your name in the lobby of your Datong hotel or at the Datong Railway Station. You will then board your private vehicle for a direct 30-minute drive to the Yungang Grottoes. During the journey, the tour guide will share fascinating histories and stories, and you are encouraged to ask any questions you may have.

Situated at the southern base of Wuzhou Mountain, the Yungang Grottoes are carved into the mountain and stretch approximately one kilometer (0.62 miles) from east to west. They consist of 252 caves and 51,000 statues within an 18,000 square meter carved area.

The Yungang Grottoes are a remarkable example of Buddhist cave art in China from the 5th and 6th centuries. The Five Caves, created by Tan Yao, showcase a harmonious unity of layout and design, representing a classical masterpiece of early Chinese Buddhist art.

While influenced by Buddhist cave art from South and Central Asia, the Yungang Grottoes have uniquely interpreted this art form with a distinct Chinese character and local essence. Consequently, they have played a crucial role among early Oriental Buddhist grottoes and have significantly impacted Buddhist cave art in China and East Asia.

In December 2001, the Yungang Grottoes were inscribed on the World Cultural Heritage List.

Hengshan Hanging Temple (Xuankong si) - After enjoying lunch at a local restaurant, proceed to the Hengshan Hanging Temple, a 1.5-hour drive away, while enjoying the scenic countryside views.

The Hanging Temple is the only existing temple that accommodates worship for Taoists, Confucians, and Buddhists. Constructed in 491 A.D., it is an architectural marvel, perched on the west cliff of Jinxia Gorge over 50 meters above the ground. A unique mechanical theory was employed in its construction, with crossbeams partially embedded into the rock as a foundation, while the rock behind serves as support. From below, it resembles a castle suspended in the air. Inside, it mirrors the appearance of other temples. The architecture reflects a significant cultural achievement of the Chinese people.

Immerse yourself in the historical ambiance and appreciate the charm of ancient China. Feel free to discuss your preferred destinations within the old city with your tour guide. City Wall of Pingyao - Typically, the tour begins at the Pingyao Old City Wall.

The City Wall of Pingyao is one of China’s best-preserved walls. In 1997, it was listed as a World Cultural Heritage site along with the Ancient Town. Follow your tour guide to explore the area.

Ming and Qing Dynasties Street - Next, explore the shops and restaurants along the Ancient Ming-Qing Street, experiencing the vibrant business atmosphere and admiring the Ming and Qing style architecture. This is an ideal spot for souvenir shopping.

Ping Yao Temple of the City God - Continue to one of China’s best-preserved temples, the Temple of the City God. Admire its exquisite woodcarvings, stone sculptures, painted sculptures, and mural paintings, showcasing the exceptional craftsmanship of the time.

Pingyao Confucian Temple - Afterwards, visit the Pingyao Confucian Temple. Established during the Tang Dynasty (618 - 908 AD), it is one of the oldest and best-preserved Confucian temples in China. Stroll through the courtyards and halls with your guide, and learn about Confucius (551 - 478 BC), the renowned philosopher, educator, and founder of the Confucian school.
