The first destination is the Yungang Grottoes, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its construction took 40 years during the 5th century. The site extends over half a mile (1,000 meters) continuously from east to west. Out of the original 53 grottoes, 45 remain, featuring 250 niches and 51,000 Buddhist statues adorned with murals and frescoes, all representing masterpieces of ancient Chinese carving art and the embodiment of the religious faith of ancient people.
- Hengshan Hanging Temple (Xuankong si) - Following this, proceed to the Hanging Monastery at the base of Hengshan Mountain, located an hour’s drive from the city center. This monastery uniquely enshrines Buddhism, Taoism, and Confucianism within a single establishment. The architecture is remarkable, as it literally hangs on the mountain cliff approximately 164 feet (50 meters) above the ground. You will view it from the outside since climbing the monastery is currently prohibited.
After the tour, you will be transferred back to your hotel at around 5:30 pm.
