Khari Baoli is a renowned street in Delhi, India, famous for its wholesale grocery and being Asia’s largest wholesale spice market. It offers a wide variety of spices, nuts, herbs, and food products such as rice and tea. Established in the 17th century, the market is located near the historic Delhi Red Fort, on Khari Baoli Road next to Fatehpuri Masjid at the western end of Chandni Chowk. Over the years, it has become a popular tourist destination, particularly for those exploring the heritage sites of Old Delhi.
The market developed around Fatehpuri Masjid, which was constructed in 1650 by Fatehpuri Begum, one of the wives of Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan. During Shah Jahan’s era, it became known as Khari Baoli (derived from ‘Baoli,’ meaning stepwell, and ‘Khari’ or ‘Khara,’ meaning salty) due to a saline water stepwell used for animals and bathing.
