University of Dhaka - Established in 1921 during the British Raj, the University of Dhaka is the oldest university in modern Bangladesh. It earned the nickname “Oxford of the East” in its early years and has played a pivotal role in the country’s modern history. Following the partition of India, it became a hub for progressive and democratic movements in Pakistan. Its students and faculty were instrumental in the rise of Bengali nationalism and the independence of Bangladesh.
Shahid Minar - A symbol of Bengali nationalism, this monument honors the martyrs of the historic Language Movement of 1952, the only language movement in world history. Every year on February 21, hundreds of thousands gather with floral wreaths and bouquets to pay their respects in a solemn atmosphere. Celebrations begin at midnight. In recognition of the language movement, the UN declared February 21 as International Mother Language Day in 1999, observed worldwide annually.
Dhakeshwari Temple - As the National Hindu Temple, Dhakeshwari Temple is state-owned and known as Bangladesh’s ‘National Temple’. The name “Dhakeshwari” translates to “Goddess of Dhaka”. Built during the Sena Dynasty in the 12th century CE by King Ballal Sen, the temple is a significant Hindu worship site in Bangladesh. Although the current architectural style is not from that period due to numerous repairs, it remains a vital part of Dhaka’s cultural heritage. Researchers suggest it is one of the Shakti Peethas, where a jewel from the crown of Goddess Sati fell. The temple has been held in high regard for centuries.
Lalbag Fort - A visit to Dhaka is incomplete without seeing Lalbagh Fort, also known as the Fort of Aurangabad, built in 1678 AD during the reign of Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb. This beautiful fort represents the unfulfilled dream of a Mughal Prince, with history and mystery woven into its very foundation. Note: Closed on Sundays.
Star Mosque (Tara Masjid) - This exquisite mosque from the Mughal dynasty, made of white marble and adorned with floral and star patterns, is a sight to behold. Even locals pause to admire its timeless beauty. Unlike other Mughal structures, there is no inscription indicating its founding year, but trustees believe it was built in 1711.
Armenian Church of the Holy Resurrection - In the 17th and 18th centuries, Armenians had a strong presence in Dhaka. After the Persians conquered Eastern Armenia, Shah Abbas deported about 40,000 Armenian traders to Isfahan and New Julfa, from where they came to Bengal. They established a trading community recognized by the Mughal government since the late 17th century, trading textiles, jute, and leather. Their colony in Dhaka is still known as Armanitola. The Armenian Church in Dhaka stands as a testament to the once-significant Armenian community in the region, though it is now abandoned.
