- Pudacuo National Park - Situated at an elevation ranging from 3,500m to 4,159m, Pudacuo National Park spans 1,300 square kilometers in Shangri-La County. It holds the distinction of being China’s first national park to adhere to the International Union for Conservation of Nature standards. The park includes Bita Lake Nature Reserve and Shudu Lake Scenic Area, both part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site, Three Parallel Rivers of Yunnan Protected Areas.
Pudacuo National Park primarily features Shudu Lake, Bita Lake, and Militang Pasture. Visitors are encouraged to explore the park in a clockwise direction: Entrance – Shudu Lake – Militang Pasture – Bita Lake – Exit. The entire route covers 69 km, with sightseeing buses available at each location, from the entrance to the scenic areas and exit. A complete visit to Pudacuo National Park typically takes 4 to 6 hours.
- White-Water Terraces (Baishuitai) - Located at the base of Haba Snow Mountain, the White Water Terraces are just over 100 km from Shangri-La County and sit at an altitude of 2,380 meters.
These terraces are a natural marvel created by the dissolution of calcium carbonate in spring water. As the spring water, rich in calcium bicarbonate, flows down, the carbonate gradually precipitates, forming terrace-like shapes over the years. Known as “legacy fields left by fairies,” they cover approximately three square kilometers, making them the largest spring terraces in China.
Surrounded by lush hills and trees, and bordered by blue waves, visitors can enjoy the distant mountain scenery and nearby water views in a serene setting.
- Tiger Leaping Gorge (Hutiao Xia) - Positioned between Lijiang and Shangri-La, Tiger Leaping Gorge in Yunnan Province, China, is carved between snow-capped peaks, forming one of the world’s deepest gorges.
The powerful Jinsha River, a part of the Yangtze River, showcases nature’s might here.
Renowned as one of the world’s premier treks, the rugged Tiger Leaping Gorge trail rejuvenates visitors with its stunning natural beauty and breathtaking snow mountain vistas. Additionally, the Naxi culture adds a unique charm to the Gorge.
- Sumtsaling Monastery - Also known as Songzanlin Monastery, Ganden Sumtseling Monastery, or Guihua Monastery, it is the largest Tibetan Buddhist monastery in Yunnan Province, belonging to the Yellow Hat Sect of Gelug. It is also the most significant monastery in southwest China.
Constructed at the base of Foping Mountain with an impressive facade, Songzanlin Monastery is a faithful replica of the Potala Palace in Lhasa, earning it the nickname “Little Potala Palace.” As a repository of Tibetan culture, Songzanlin Monastery is also known as the “Tibetan Art Museum.”
- Dukezong Ancient Town - This 1,300-year-old town boasts traditional Tibetan homes, ancient temples, pagodas, and narrow, winding alleyways, all adorned with colorful Tibetan prayer flags. Dukezong Ancient Town offers visitors an authentic glimpse into Tibetan culture and serves as a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle of city life.
Strolling through Dukezong’s winding, maze-like streets is a delightful way to experience the town’s enchanting historical charm. This allows for close observation of traditional dwellings and intriguing architecture. Numerous shops and outdoor markets offer jewelry, thangka paintings, incense, and more, providing beautiful souvenir options.
Dukezong also features several teahouses and authentic restaurants, along with a few cosmopolitan bars that come alive at night. The Hazelnut Bar is a popular spot to enjoy Tibetan dance and music performances.
