Meteora - The next morning, after breakfast, ascend to the top of the rocks to visit the Meteora monasteries.
This is a stress-free tour, allowing ample time for photos, leisurely exploration, and enjoyment at your own pace. The driver will manage all details and provide live commentary throughout the trip.
There are six monasteries at Meteora: Great Meteoron, Varlaam, Roussanou, Agios Stefanos, Holy Trinity, and St. Nikolaos. Depending on the day and time, you will visit 2 or 3 of these monasteries.
The Meteora monasteries, dating from the 14th century, are unique worldwide due to the incredible collection of Byzantine and Christian artifacts. These include the traditional attire of the monks, exquisite paintings, and etched glass. In 1981, the James Bond film ‘For Your Eyes Only’ was partially filmed at the Monastery of Holy Trinity. In ‘Game of Thrones,’ Tyrion is seen hanging at the cliff’s edge with the breathtaking rocks of Meteora in the background.
Battlefield of Thermopylae - The Battle of Thermopylae was a historic conflict between an alliance of Greek city-states, led by King Leonidas I of Sparta, and the Achaemenid Empire of Xerxes I. It occurred over three days during the second Persian invasion of Greece, simultaneously with the naval battle at Artemisium, in August or September 480 BC, at the narrow coastal pass of Thermopylae (“The Hot Gates”). The Persian invasion was a delayed response to the defeat of the first Persian invasion of Greece, concluded by the Athenian victory at the Battle of Marathon in 490 BC. By 480 BC, Xerxes had assembled a massive army to conquer all of Greece. Both ancient and modern writers have cited the Battle of Thermopylae as an example of a patriotic army’s power in defending its homeland. The defenders’ performance is also highlighted as an example of the benefits of training, equipment, and strategic use of terrain as force multipliers, symbolizing courage against overwhelming odds.
Kamena Vourla - The final stop is at the seaside village of Kamena Vourla, where guests are treated to an afternoon coffee or tea by the sea as a courtesy.
