• The Venerable Thich Quang Duc Monument - On June 11, 1963, Thich Quang Duc traveled from the war-ravaged city of Huế to Saigon in an Austin Westminster. He exited the light blue car at a bustling intersection, sat peacefully in the lotus position, and a colleague poured gasoline from a five-gallon can over him. Surrounded by a circle of protesters, he set himself on fire. In his final note, he expressed: “I respectfully urge President Ngo Dinh Diem to adopt a compassionate approach towards the people and ensure religious equality to sustain the nation’s strength forever.”

In 2010, a memorial was erected at the exact spot where he passed away half a century earlier, depicting the monk engulfed in flames. Before the statue, which is positioned in front of a bas-relief illustrating the impactful event, American journalist Malcolm Browne’s photographs served as the most accessible reminders of the incident.
