Fantastic experience Never to be forgotten - Absolutely amazing experience. Picked up from hotel at 7.30 am. Bus ride to harbour for the boat. Got some fantastic pictures and videos of the whales. Lunch was fab and the waterfall was stunning. Well worth the trip and staff were very friendly. Be prepared though it is a full day. Back at hotel roughly 7pm.

You better be fit! - We booked this excursion through our hotel dead set on seeing whales. The excursion started bright and early and we did not get back until around 830 ish. It was definitely an adventure. Nacho our tour guide was wonderful at explaining everything in English as well as Spanish. Rene our bus driver kept us safe and showed us a part of the DR we would have never seen. We traversed through the countryside on an air conditioned motor coach stopped for a restroom break on the way. There was a clean bathroom area and store that sold snacks and souvenirs. From there we made it to a waterside restaurant and had a small snack before boarding our assigned boats. The life jackets were well used but everyone had one. The whale watching had us mesmerized and we found this to be absolutely worth it. Our boat drivers got us close enough to see several whales while being distant enough as not to disturb these lovely creatures. After this, we disembarked at another location where we hopped onto an open air truck that drove us a fair distance to a park in the jungle. Let me just tell you, the lunch was so delicious. It was on a covered pavilion, buffet style. They had a wonderful variety of dishes but make sure whatever you take, you clean your plate! You definitely do not want to over eat either. You better make sure to pack sunscreen, a towel, closed toed comfy walking shoes because you are about to ride a horse and hike down to see a waterfall and its not for those who have trouble walking or climbing or horseback riding. Each of us had a wonderful gentle horse with a well padded saddle, as well as a guide who led us down the mountain to the waterfall. My handler, Willy, was kind, friendly, and we chatted as he helped me through the treacherous path ahead. My horse was well behaved and I did not notice any of the other horses being ornery. The helpers were there every step of the way and I could not have traversed the natural steps and enjoyed the waterfall without him. He helped me so much. Please make sure you bring money in the form of cash to tip your handler and your tour guide. There is a little souvenir area that can take paypal payment. There was also someone who rode with us on the boat taking pics of everyone enjoying the ride and he took whale pics as well. The photographer took pics of us through our jungle and waterfall journey as well. Me and my two friends split the cost of the large amount of pics he took of us and the whales. We got some nice photos of us together and alone at the waterfall. There are alot of folks down there enjoying the water so dont expect for it to be quiet. We had our exercise for the day, no question. Overall we enjoyed the trip but prepare yourself. The next day we were definitely sore and spent the day doing absolutely nothing the next day to recuperate.

Whale Watching/Waterfall/Horseback riding. - I will say overall, it was a great trip!
High points
*Nacho Family! Nacho, our tour guide was absolutely fantastic. His energy, comedy and knowledge was great!
*Boat guides were fantastic. We got to see several Whales
*Lunch @ the waterfall/horse portion was very good.
*Each horse rider gets their own personal guide.
*waterfall was beautiful
Low points :opinion of me and my crew
*This is a long day . They do list it is 13 hours. Not all activity. There is a lot of travel. Motor coach bus, boat ride to/from the island, open air transportation from boat to horse facility. Then ride it in reverse back.
*we booked this with Amstar at our hotel last minute. And our fault for not asking more questions
*for us this was high activity. The horse ride is not on flat ground. You are in the jungle and the trail is rough.
*the horse ride only takes you so far where you have to continue on foot down several hundred uneven stairs to get to the waterfall. Worst for us was the climb back up.
Ultimately an in shape person that likes nature and hikes would probably have no issue with the physical activity of this portion of the trip.
I would read the description, they are accurate to say no wheelchair accessible and moderate activity.
We were very appreciative of all of our guides and tipped accordingly.

Whale watching/ waterfall tour - Very fun experience even though it rained majority of the trip. Great tour guides and volunteer guides with the horseback riding.

Average - The main reason to take this excursion was to see whales, unfortunately there was only tail of whale we saw for may be 1-2 seconds.
Whale watching tour includes motion sickness and vomits as the boats floats a lot.
the other stop at limon waterfall which has horse riding was saddening to see because the volunteers there beat their horses continuously and also asked and expect a huge amount of usd tip typically tanging from 20usd and up. So frustrating
Tour guide was average and felt like he is just working there to get surveys filled out
No music throughout anywhere, very boring.
The 3 stars is solely for the waterfall and horses that took us on their back.

Horseriding is cruel and unethical! - The whale-watching bit of the tour was amazing! We got so close and the whales were leaping out of the water and splashing their tails which was incredible to witness. Quite a few people were seasick so it might be a good idea to take anti-nausea tablets beforehand.
However, I would absolutely NOT recommend the horseriding portion of this trip. It felt cruel and unethical. Firstly, the guides are "volunteers" which means they get no salary. This leads to an incredibly awkward interaction at the end where $30 is demanded per person. As the trip already costs $190pp, I cannot understand why these people cannot be given a wage. It seems very exploitative.
I was also distrurbed by the animal cruelty. The horses looked exhausted and badly cared for – one of the horses had a visibly broken leg. They are forced to walk a rocky and hilly trail in the heat up to 20 times a day apparantly, and it's very obvious they do not want to. My guide had to whip the horse with branches throughout to make it move. My horse also slipped on wet rocks several times, causing me to almost fall off. If I had fallen, I would have injured myself badly on the sharp rocks. The horse would also have been injured. There is absolutely no way this trip has any animal safeguarding and I found the experience upsetting to say the least, not to mention dangerous!
The horseriding portion is clearly filler to justify the cost. I would suggest the operator reviews this activity and takes steps to make it more ethical for both humans and animals, or if they cannot do that, scrap this activity.
Please also note you will only spend around three hours doing actual activities. The rest of the 14-hour day was riding around in various coaches and buses and standing around waiting. If you can, just book on ti the whale part.
