Great day on the water with Canoes Loisirs - Canoeing on the Dordogne was the highlight of our trip to the area. Canoes Loisirs were professional and helpful from my very first contact with them. Since we didn't have a car they arranged transportation from Sarlat and back for us for 20 euros. Their staff at Vitrac were courteous and professional. They provided life jackets, a dry bucket, paddles, a canoe, and very good instructions. The river and its banks are quite peaceful and beautiful. Only when the wind was blowing toward us did we have to paddle hard. Otherwise only one of us had to guide the canoe as the water did most of the work for us. The castles, chateaus, and villages are beautiful from the river. There are numerous snack bars along the way for refreshments or you can picnic as we did. I would definitely do this again with this company and recommend it as a way to see the region from a different perspective.

A beautiful relaxing day. - This was a well organised trip with very helpful staff at CannoesLoisirs. We had a beautiful day paddling down the river. We chose to be picked up from Sarlat and the van was on time and easy to find. They brought us back to the same place as soon as we finished our trip. Our only problem was the in e mail asking for our preferred options the reply button would not work. We called them and everything was sorted out straight away. A great day out.

Canoe Ride down the Dordogne River - Canoeing down the Dordogne River was one of the highlights of our trip to France. The entire experience was peaceful, scenic, and surprisingly easy, even for beginners. The river flows gently, making it perfect for a relaxed paddle while soaking in the beauty of the surrounding countryside. The views were absolutely stunning—from medieval castles perched on cliffs to charming stone villages nestled along the riverbanks. We passed under ancient bridges, alongside limestone cliffs, and through stretches of forest that felt untouched by time. It was like paddling through a living postcard. The rental company made everything simple. They provided a well-kept canoe, safety equipment, a map, and clear instructions. The staff was friendly and helpful, offering suggestions on routes and pointing out the best spots to stop for a picnic or swim. We felt well-prepared and completely at ease. One of the best parts was the freedom to go at our own pace. We stopped for lunch on a small river beach and even had time to explore a nearby village before finishing the route. If you're visiting the Dordogne region, I highly recommend taking a canoe ride. It’s a perfect blend of nature, history, and tranquility—and a truly memorable way to see the heart of the French countryside. If I had to make one suggestion for those considering the amount of time, the 4-castle ride is a solid 5-6 hours of straight canoeing to complete the full length. We stopped at a few snack areas along the way, but there are portions of the river with no current whatsoever and you will need to exert yourself to get down the river. If we did it again, we probably would have chosen to leave at the departure location, rather than being bussed up river for an even longer ride. That would have shorted the ride to about 3 hours of canoeing.
