Great day - We packed a lot of great experiences into this fun day! Our guide Jon was fun and informative as we first toured his home town of Zarautz, complete with a visit to the market for snacks and drinks. Next was our favorite part, a gorgeous hike through farms and along the coast with stunning views. The views from the winery were even more breathtaking and the wine and tuna were delicious. We finished in Getaria, another small coastal town, where we toured and then enjoyed a delicous lunch of fresh, straight off the boat grilled fish. Highly recommend!

Basque Adventure - Our tour with John was excellent! We met him at the San Sebastián train station around 8:40 a.m. and took a 25-minute train ride to Zarautz, John’s hometown. This made the visit extra special, as he was delighted to share his roots and immerse us in Basque culture. We began by visiting Dr. Velasco’s orchestra, then strolled along the beach, explored the town, and even met the Mayor, whom John gladly introduced us to! After that, we went to the market, where we met local vendors selling vegetables, fish, meat, and cheese. We began our appetizers right there at a small table in the middle of the market, enjoying Basque bread with sheep cheese, tiny square-like apple jam, and apple cider.
After our appetizer, we began our hike! John explained the origin of the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage. The trek took about 1 hour and 50 minutes to reach the winery and was of moderate difficulty—not steep—with a path that began with cobblestones and eventually leveled out. There’s also an elevator you can take if you prefer not to hike uphill at the start. Nevertheless, from the top of the mountain, the view was magnificent, overlooking the entire town, vineyards, and the Bay of Biscay. I recommend wearing comfortable shoes; hiking shoes are optional.
We then headed to Ameztoi for our wine tasting, where we sampled three crisp and refreshing white wines—each absolutely amazing. Alongside the wines, we were served freshly baked bread and the most flavorful tuna I’ve ever tasted. Then we journeyed down to this quaint small town of Getaria which took us approximately 40 minutes. There, we wandered around, met people John knew, and visited the old church dating back to the 15th century. John also took the liberty of booking a lunch spot for us, as getting a reservation in the area can be quite challenging. We went to Balearri Getaria-Jatetxea, a hidden seafood gem! I highly recommend trying the grilled prawns, octopus, stingray, and cheesecake! On our way back, we stopped at Dona Doni Izozkiak and tried several flavors, but their mango paprika and dulce de leche were the standouts!
To wrap this up—a massive THANK YOU to John for his unwavering guidance and support throughout the tour. He is knowledgeable, kind, friendly, and incredibly flexible. From sharing fascinating local history to introducing us to hidden gems and friendly locals, John made this tour truly unforgettable. I can’t recommend him and his tour highly enough!

The Perfect Day of Wine, Food, and Scenery - We had the most amazing day on our walking winery tour with Sandra! It ended up just being the two of us who booked that day, but they still ran the tour without canceling, which we really appreciated. Sandra took us on the train to the starting point, and from there it was such a great mix of local food, beautiful views, and relaxed walking.
We got to explore the local markets, try some great snacks, walk part of the Camino trail, and visit a winery with an incredible view. Sandra was so friendly and knowledgeable—she answered all our questions and made the whole day feel easy and fun. They even helped us book a reservation at an amazing Michelin-starred restaurant in town after the tour, which was the perfect way to end the day. Such a great balance of activity and relaxation—we loved every minute!

Unique Experience with Breathtaking views - Unforgettable experience! Hector blended history, local food, and the experience of walking the Camino for an unbelievable day. We were lucky with beautiful, wild weather to hike the hillsides along the ancient Roman road, and passed many people walking the full Camino. 10/10 recommend.
