Riding the Gin Wave: A Surfer’s Journey at Shakespeare Distillery
Trading the surfboard for a gin glass, I embarked on a spirited adventure at Stratford’s only working distillery. Join me as I dive into the world of gin-making, crafting my own unique blend and discovering the rich history behind this beloved spirit.
A Spirited Adventure in Stratford
As someone who spends most of his days riding the waves and soaking up the sun, the idea of swapping my surfboard for a gin glass was an intriguing one. My partner and I decided to take a break from our usual island-hopping adventures and head to the charming town of Stratford upon Avon. The allure of the Shakespeare Distillery Tour was too tempting to resist, and I was eager to dive into the world of gin-making.
Upon arrival, we were warmly greeted by David, who handed us a refreshing Gin & Tonic to kick off the experience. The distillery had a cozy, welcoming vibe, much like the laid-back beach bars I frequent back home. As we settled in, we joined a group of fellow gin enthusiasts for a chat, sharing stories and laughter as we prepared for the tour.
David led us through the distillery, weaving tales of gin’s rich history and its Tudor influences. It was fascinating to learn about the origins of this beloved spirit, and I couldn’t help but draw parallels to the way I explore the history and culture of the islands I visit. The tour was both informative and entertaining, setting the stage for the hands-on experience that awaited us.
Crafting Our Own Gin
The highlight of the day was undoubtedly the Gin School, where we had the chance to create our very own gin. Joined by Jack, another knowledgeable and friendly guide, we were each given a mini distillery setup and a list of ingredients to choose from. It felt like a creative adventure, much like crafting the perfect wave on a surfboard.
With Jack and David’s guidance, we selected and weighed our ingredients, carefully considering the flavors we wanted to infuse into our gin. The process was both fun and educational, and the camaraderie among the group added to the enjoyment. We decided to name our creation “Mortie’s Gin,” a nod to the lively spirit of the day.
As we worked, we were treated to another Gin & Tonic, which kept the atmosphere light and jovial. The laughter and banter flowed as freely as the gin, and it was clear that everyone was having a fantastic time. The experience reminded me of the joy I find in sharing a perfect wave with fellow surfers, where the thrill of the moment is amplified by the company you keep.
A Toast to New Adventures
After completing the gin-making process, we had the opportunity to taste three different gins, each with its own unique character. It was a delightful exploration of flavors, much like discovering a hidden cove or a secret surf spot. The final Gin & Tonic was chosen based on our favorite from the tasting, and it was the perfect way to cap off the experience.
We were then informed of our gin’s alcohol percentage, a robust 44.5%, and proceeded to label and bottle our creation. Holding the finished product in my hands, I felt a sense of accomplishment akin to catching a perfect wave. It was a tangible reminder of the day’s adventure and the memories we had made.
As we left the distillery, I couldn’t help but reflect on the parallels between this experience and my life on the ocean. Both are about exploration, creativity, and the joy of discovery. The Shakespeare Distillery Tour was a delightful detour from my usual pursuits, and I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a spirited adventure. Just be sure to have a hearty brunch beforehand, as the gin flows as freely as the laughter!
