Constructed in the late 16th century, it was the home of the Swedish royal court for much of the 18th century. Besides being the royal family’s private residence, the palace is a well-loved tourist destination and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, noted for its Theatre (an opera house within the palace) and the Chinese Pavilion.
• Gripsholm Castle - Gripsholm Castle is considered one of Sweden’s most remarkable historical landmarks. A fortress was initially constructed at this site around 1380 by Bo Jonsson Grip, remaining in his family’s possession until King Gustav I seized mansions and castles in 1526. The King demolished it and erected a fortified castle with circular corner towers and a defensive wall. Only the façade of a wall from the original medieval fortress still stands.
