- Urquhart Castle - Traveling through Drumnadrochit and reaching the hilltop, visitors arrive at Urquhart Castle, which majestically overlooks the loch. Once among Scotland’s largest castles, Urquhart has a storied history of conflict, frequently changing hands between the Scots and the English during the wars of independence. It is near this location that St. Columba is said to have encountered the Loch Ness Monster in 580 AD, when the creature emerged from the water to attack one of his followers, only to be banished back by St. Columba. The castle’s gatehouse was intentionally destroyed in 1692 to prevent its future use as a military fortress.
- Culloden Battlefield - Following Urquhart Castle, the journey leads to Culloden Battlefield, the site of the last battle on British soil, fought on April 16, 1746. This battle saw the Jacobites, who sought to restore the Stuarts to the throne, clash with the Hanoverian government forces. In just over an hour, more than 1,600 men were killed, 1,500 of whom were Jacobites. The outcome of this battle forever altered the Highland way of life.
- Clava Cairns - Less than a mile from the battlefield lies Clava Cairns, an ancient burial site over 4,000 years old. It is believed to have inspired Diana Gabaldon’s “Outlander” series. The winter solstice held great significance for these ancient people, and the cairns are aligned southwest to face the midwinter sun.
- Cawdor Castle - After visiting Clava, the tour proceeds to Cawdor Castle. This castle has been the residence of the Thanes of Cawdor for centuries and remarkably remained untouched during the Jacobite uprisings, despite its location between Auldearn and Culloden, where two battles occurred. Today, it is still inhabited by the Dowager Countess of Cawdor.
- Inverness - Returning to Inverness, the tour stops at Inverness Cathedral, the northernmost Anglican cathedral in the UK, completed in 1866. As the journey continues through Inverness, visitors pass the Old High Church, where Jacobite prisoners were held after Culloden before their execution in the graveyard. Musket ball marks from these executions are still visible on the church wall. Opposite the Old High Church stands Dunbar Hospital, constructed with stones from Cromwell’s citadel, originally from Beauly Priory. Further along, Abertarff House, the oldest house in Inverness dating back to 1593, once served as the townhouse for the chiefs of Clan Fraser. Continuing through Inverness, the tour passes Inverness Castle and the statue of Flora Macdonald, renowned for aiding Bonnie Prince Charlie’s escape to Skye after Culloden.
