- Dubai Creek - Dubai Creek divides the city into two areas, with Deira to the north and Bur Dubai to the south. The creek has played a crucial role in the city’s development, initially attracting settlers for fishing and pearl diving. Small communities emerged along the creek as early as 4,000 years ago, while the modern era began in the 1830s when the Bani Yas tribe settled here. On the Bur Dubai side, adjacent to the Bastakia neighborhood, the waterfront has been revitalized as the Al Seef district, featuring a waterfront promenade lined with traditional coral-block and limestone buildings, a floating market, and craft shops. It’s an excellent spot for a leisurely walk with stunning water views.
- Deira Old Souk Abra Station - Deira is located on the northern bank of Dubai Creek, and its winding streets reveal a melting pot of various nationalities that have made Dubai their home. On the shore, ancient dhows load and unload against a backdrop of modern banks, hotels, and office buildings. For visitors, Deira is best known for its traditional souks (markets), bustling with shoppers throughout the day. Deira Gold Souk is globally renowned as the largest gold bazaar in the world. The Deira Spice Souk offers every imaginable spice, with stalls brimming with bags of frankincense, cumin, paprika, saffron, sumac, and thyme, along with fragrant oud wood, rose water, and incense. The fish market offers a more authentic experience.
- Al Shindagha Museum - Sheikh Saeed Al Maktoum, the Ruler of Dubai from 1921 to 1958 and grandfather to the current ruler, had his former residence rebuilt and restored as a museum, showcasing fine Arabian architecture. Inside, the Dubai Museum of Historical Photographs and Documents displays many captivating old photographs of Dubai from 1948 to 1953. The museum’s marine wing features photos of fishing, pearling, and boat building. Throughout the building, numerous letters, maps, coins, and stamps are on display, illustrating the Emirate’s development. Nearby, the Sheikh Obaid bin Thani House has been restored with displays of traditional interiors.
- The Dubai Heritage Village - Dubai’s architectural, cultural, and maritime heritage is highlighted at the Heritage and Diving Village, with exhibits related to pearl diving and dhow building — two of old Dubai’s historic economic pillars. There are also recreations of traditional Bedouin and coastal village life, featuring Persian homes, a traditional coffeehouse, and a small souk where potters and weavers demonstrate their crafts at the stalls. Local music and dance performances occur from October to April, and visitors can receive advice from practitioners of traditional medicine.
- Jumeirah Mosque - Jumeirah Mosque is regarded by many as the most beautiful mosque in Dubai. An exact replica of Cairo’s Al-Azhar Mosque, which is eight times larger, the Jumeirah Mosque is a splendid example of Islamic architecture. This stone structure is built in the medieval Fatimid style, with two minarets showcasing intricate stonework details. It is especially captivating in the evening when illuminated by floodlights. The Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Centre for Cultural Understanding (which also offers tours, lectures, Arabic classes, and cultural meals) organizes guided tours of the mosque to promote a better understanding of the Muslim faith. Tours start at 10am daily, except Fridays.
- Burj Al Arab - The Burj Al-Arab is the tallest hotel in the world, standing 321 meters high on its own artificial island along the Dubai coastline. Designed to resemble a billowing dhow sail, the building’s exterior is illuminated by a choreographed, colored light show at night. Luxurious in every aspect, the Burj Al-Arab is among the most expensive hotels globally, with the most opulent suites costing over $15,000 per night.
- The Dubai Mall - Dubai Mall is the city’s leading mall and provides access to the Burj Khalifa and the Dubai Aquarium. There is also an ice-skating rink, gaming zone, and cinema complex for additional entertainment options. The shopping and dining experiences are endless, and there are nearly always special events such as live music and fashion shows within the mall. The most notable of these are the annual Dubai Shopping Festival in January and February and the Dubai Summer Surprises Festival in July and August.
