-
University of Otago - Established in 1879, the University of Otago is renowned for its iconic clock tower, a standout feature that majestically overlooks the entire campus.
-
The Octagon - Visit the statue of Robert Burns. There are four versions worldwide, located in New York City (USA), Dundee (Scotland), London (England), and Dunedin (New Zealand).
-
First Church of Otago - Designed by R. A Lawson, this notable Gothic-style church is centrally located in Dunedin city. Its construction began in 1867 and concluded in 1875.
-
Dunedin Railway Station - Celebrated as one of New Zealand’s finest examples of Edwardian Baroque architecture, the Railway Station is among the country’s most photographed landmarks.
-
Larnach Castle & Gardens - Nestled on the scenic Otago Peninsula, Larnach Castle is a top attraction in New Zealand.
Beautifully restored by the Barker Family, the Castle and its gardens are central to the Dunedin visitor experience.
A lunch break will be taken at the Larnach Castle Ballroom Café.
- Sandfly Bay Track - Sandfly Bay offers a breathtaking experience with its towering sand dunes leading to a vast beach. The area is protected by headlands and coastal rock formations.
The trail to the beach begins at the carpark, descending through sandy dunes. Enjoy the stunning bay views from the viewing platforms along the way.
The beach is encircled by sand dunes, cliffs, and powerful waves, offering a unique view of Lion’s Head Rock, an offshore island beyond the waves.
Despite its name, sandflies are rare here. However, other wildlife such as New Zealand fur seals and sea lions can be found resting on the beach. Maintain a safe distance as they are swift and potentially dangerous.
A large colony of yellow-eyed penguins resides here, often seen returning from the sea in the evening. Avoid disturbing them and their nesting areas as they are easily threatened.
- Hoopers Inlet - Hoopers Inlet offers unique scenery and a chance to observe diverse birdlife, with nearby Allans Beach often providing sightings of sea lions.
Respect their space by staying at least 10 meters away from resting sea lions and 20 meters from active ones. Avoid lingering on beaches at dawn and dusk when penguins may come ashore.
- Allans Beach - Allans Beach is one of the many wild, rugged, and stunning beaches on the Otago Peninsula. It is a habitat for New Zealand fur seals, sea lions, and yellow-eyed penguins. Visitors are advised to maintain a distance of at least 10 meters (33 ft) from these animals.
When encountering yellow-eyed penguins, crouch down to avoid disturbing them.
This is a self-guided walk to the beach. Wildlife sightings are not guaranteed.
