The descent leads to Karakul Lake, followed by the final high pass of the Pamir Highway, the Kyzyl Art at 4,282 meters, which essentially marks the border between Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan. Karakul Lake, at 3,915 meters, is the highest lake in Central Asia and is too elevated to support aquatic life.
