Fremantle was expanded to accommodate commercial shipping, transforming it into a vibrant trade hub. It was declared a city in 1929 and served as the largest submarine base during World War II. Post-war European immigration, especially from Italy, influenced Fremantle’s unique character, further highlighted when it hosted the 1987 America’s Cup. Today, Fremantle is celebrated for its Victorian and Edwardian architecture, convict-era heritage, and a lively arts and culinary scene.
The Fremantle War Memorial, situated on Monument Hill, is an 11-acre public reserve. The Fallen Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Memorial was established by the Fremantle Town Council in 1928 to honor the sacrifices of the First World War.
