Cotopaxi National Park - The journey begins with a drive from Quito along the Avenue of the Volcanoes, heading south to Cotopaxi National Park. Upon arrival, visitors can explore a natural museum to learn about the park’s nature, geology, history, and the eruptions of the Cotopaxi volcano (5897m). The next stop is Limpiopungo Lake (3800m), where an acclimatization walk offers the chance to observe a variety of birds, including ducks, eagles, and Andean gulls. The drive continues to a parking area (4600m), where, on clear days, the Andean landscape offers breathtaking views. If conditions permit, there is an opportunity to hike for 45 minutes to the José Ribas refuge (4800m) to enjoy a warm cup of hot chocolate. In the afternoon, the journey continues to Baños town, located 1.5 hours away, a popular tourist destination with numerous activities.
Baños - Known for its naturally heated thermal baths, which give Baños, Ecuador its name, the town is also famous for adventure sports. The surrounding area features mountains, rivers, waterfalls, and hot springs.
Exploring Baños Surroundings - Tena
La Casa del Arbol - This iconic spot, also known as the Swing at the End of the World, is just a 20-minute drive from the main town. It features a small treehouse with swings that extend over a steep mountain slope, offering a stunning view of the Tungurahua volcano on clear days.
Cascada el Manto de la Novia - Travel along the “Ruta de las Cascadas” or “Waterfall Road,” where numerous beautiful waterfalls, such as Agoyan and Manto de la Novia, can be seen. The route includes cable cars and zip lines that provide visitors with a scenic view over a gorge.
CASCADA EL PAILON - Upon reaching Pailon del Diablo, two paths offer different experiences of the waterfall. The lower path leads through a lush jungle area, offering a more challenging hike to a suspension bridge with a fantastic view of the waterfall. For a shorter hike and a closer view of the waterfall, the upper path is recommended. In the afternoon, continue over the last hill towards the magnificent Amazon basin.
Amazon Excursion
Misahualli - After breakfast, put on rubber boots to explore the remarkable rainforest surrounding the Amazon Lodge. Various walks, ranging from 1.5 to 4 hours, take visitors through dense, humid jungle, across muddy paths, and past diverse wildlife. A local guide will reveal the jungle’s hidden secrets and wonders. In the afternoon, visit a local community to learn about the jungle lifestyle of Indigenous Families. A Kichwa woman welcomes guests, sharing insights into their daily lives, demonstrating how to make chicha, a traditional beverage, and showcasing spiritual cleansing rituals still practiced today. Participate in a blowgun target-shooting contest and test your skills against the locals. Return to the Lodge afterward.
Amazon - Rose Farm - Quito
Pifo - Depart from the Amazon in the morning, traveling through the lush, green cloud forests of the Eastern Andes. After a long drive, stop at a charming rose farm in the highlands to learn about cultivating Ecuadorian roses. The combination of high altitude, twelve hours of sunshine, cool nights, and organic soils and compost results in strong, tall flowers year-round.
Continue driving through a small town where a local lunch is served at Colibrí Garden, a cozy house with a small organic garden where hosts grow vegetables to prepare meals for guests. At Colibrí Garden, visitors can observe hummingbirds such as the Sparkling Violetear, Black-Tailed Trainbearer, Tyrian Metaltail, Sapphire-Vented Puffleg, Sword-Billed, and other small birds like the Black Flowerpiercer, Rufus Collared Sparrow, and Golden Grosbeak. In the afternoon, drive towards Quito or request a drop-off at the airport for the next flight.
