Cotopaxi Province - The journey begins with a drive from Quito along the Avenue of the Volcanoes, heading south to Cotopaxi National Park. Upon arrival, visitors can explore a natural museum to learn about the park’s nature, geology, history, and the eruptions of the Cotopaxi volcano (5897m). The next stop is Limpiopungo Lake (3800m), where an acclimatization walk offers the chance to observe a variety of birds, including ducks, eagles, and Andean gulls. The drive continues to a parking area (4600m), where, on clear days, the Andean landscape offers breathtaking views. If conditions permit, there is an opportunity to hike for 45 minutes to the José Ribas refuge (4800m), where a delicious hot chocolate awaits. In the afternoon, the journey continues to Baños town, located 1.5 hours away, a popular tourist destination with numerous activities.
Baños - Known for its naturally heated thermal baths, which give Baños, Ecuador its name, the town is also famous for adventure sports. The surrounding area features mountains, rivers, waterfalls, and hot springs.
Baños Surroundings and Return to Quito
La Casa del Arbol - This iconic spot, also known as the Swing at the End of the World, is just a 20-minute drive from the main town. It features a small treehouse with swings on either side that extend over the steep mountain slope. The swing offers a stunning view of the Tungurahua volcano, especially on a clear day.
Cascada el Manto de la Novia - Explore the “Ruta de las Cascadas” or “Waterfall Road,” which lives up to its name. The route includes three tunnels for motor vehicles, and cyclists are advised to avoid them for safety. Along the way, visitors will encounter numerous beautiful waterfalls, such as Agoyan and Manto de la Novia, with options for cable cars and zip lines offering views over a gorge.
CASCADA EL PAILON - Upon reaching Pailon del Diablo, two paths offer different experiences of the waterfall. The lower path leads through a lush jungle area and involves a bit more hiking, culminating in a suspension bridge that provides an excellent view of the waterfall. For a shorter hike and a closer view of the waterfall, the upper path is recommended. In the afternoon, it’s time to return to Quito.
