- Blackness Castle - The first part of the journey will lead to the impressive Blackness Castle, also known as “the ship that never sailed.” Originally built as a fortress in the 15th century, it served as a port for the nearby royal burgh of Linlithgow. By the 16th century, it had become one of the most advanced artillery fortifications of its time, which led to it being repeatedly attacked throughout its history. Today, Blackness is in excellent condition.
Outlander fans might recognize Fort William in the castle’s exteriors or recall the iconic scene where Jamie Fraser was nearly whipped to death by the villainous Jonathan Randall.
Only an external visit of the castle will be conducted.
- Midhope Castle - Lallybroch, the legendary home of Jamie Fraser, will be the second stop. This 16th-century tower house has become a pilgrimage site for fans of the series seeking to relive some of its most thrilling moments.
- Linlithgow Palace - The tour continues with a stop at Linlithgow, where the magnificent palace can be admired. It was one of the main residences of the Scottish kings in the 15th and 16th centuries. Its walls witnessed the births of the famous James V and Mary, Queen of Scots. From 1603, the palace ceased to be used as a royal residence, despite being renovated by master craftsmen in an elegant French Renaissance style. In 1745, Bonnie Prince Charles frequented it for its strong symbolism linked to the Stuart dynasty, but ultimately, the armies of the Duke of Cumberland, son of George II of England, were responsible for its fiery destruction.
Today, the silhouette of Linlithgow Palace stands majestically beside a charming lake surrounded by meadows and woods. In the Outlander series, this location served as the setting for Wentworth Prison, borrowing its facade and corridors.
- Doune Castle - Scotland is renowned for its numerous castles, and the one to be visited today (optional visit) was a military fortress located along the bends of the River Teith, as well as the home of the powerful Duke of Albany. The appearance of this medieval castle has changed very little over time, making it an ideal location for filming scenes from movies and TV series: from the cult film Monty Python and the Holy Grail to Game of Thrones and, of course, Outlander. Prepare for a journey through time and an exploration of the corridors of Castle Leoch…
- Culross - The final stop will be Culross, a charming 17th-century village on the north shore of the River Forth, enlivened by delightful cottages and dominated by its distinctive yellow palace and the ruins of its Cistercian abbey. Undoubtedly, strolling through its narrow streets to reach the Market Cross is like taking a step back in time.
Outlander enthusiasts will easily recognize Cranesmuir, the village closest to Castle Leoch, along with the procurator’s house where Geillis Duncan lived with her husband. They can also see the palace gardens like Claire’s. Both Culross and the views from there will be a spectacle.
- Falkland - The final destination will be Falkland, a charming 16th-century village in the heart of Fife. Its cobbled streets and colorful, well-preserved houses transport visitors to another era, while Falkland Palace, the former residence of Scottish kings, dominates the landscape with its extraordinary Renaissance architecture and historic gardens.
Fans of the Outlander series will recognize some exteriors used to recreate scenes in the palace and its surroundings. Strolling through the village and admiring the views of the surrounding valley will make this visit a memorable and photogenic historical experience.
