Royal Burgh of Culross - Culross serves as the setting for the village of Cranesmuir, primarily in season 1 of Outlander. Noteworthy is the Mercat Cross, situated in the heart of Culross. This is where Geillis Duncan’s house is located, where Jamie rescues the young thief ‘pinned to the post,’ and where Geillis is taken to be burned for witchcraft. In season 4, Briana meets Laoghaire and Joanie while on her way to find passage to America. Joanie and Briana are seen tending a garden near the Mercat Cross, though the interior of Laoghaire’s home is depicted by the nearby Culross Palace.
-
Doune Castle - Doune Castle (an optional visit) is featured as Castle Leoch in Outlander. This medieval castle is also recognizable from various films and TV shows, including Game of Thrones and Monty Python and the Holy Grail.
-
Linlithgow Palace - Linlithgow Palace is a remarkable ruin, the birthplace of several monarchs, most notably Mary Queen of Scots. The imposing remains of Linlithgow Palace date back to the 12th century and serve as the set for the infamous Wentworth Prison in Outlander, where Jamie is imprisoned and tortured by Black Jack Randall. This is one of the series’ most intense scenes. The Palace also appears in the 2018 blockbuster ‘Outlaw King’ about Robert The Bruce. Centrally located in Linlithgow, there are plenty of lunch options nearby.
-
Midhope Castle - The Outlander Experience tour concludes with a photo opportunity at one of the series’ most iconic sets. This modest 16th-century tower house is Lallybroch, Jamie Fraser’s home. Any Outlander fan will instantly recognize the archway entrance. While visitors cannot enter the castle, Jamie’s charming Lallybroch home remains a must-see photo spot, completing the Outlander Experience.
