To keep the square as free as possible from cyclists, an underground bicycle parking was built, the ‘Tube.’ The unique entrances to the bike cellar, resembling tubes emerging from the ground, especially catch the attention. However, what many people may not know is that archaeological finds are on display in this bicycle cellar. These ruins came to light through excavation work, revealing parts of a 700-year-old gateway, for example.
• De Blob - The Blob, where Blob is an abbreviation for ‘Binary Large OBject.’ In architecture, BLOB refers to a style where the exterior of a building has irregular shapes. On the other side of the 18 Septemberplein stands a similar structure, the Bubble. As the name suggests, it is a soap bubble, but made of glass and steel. The Bubble is often considered the little sister of the Blob. However, this structure was designed by a different architect, namely Tarra architecture and urban planning.
