El Alamein - The tour begins with an early pick-up at 5:00 am from your hotel in Cairo or Giza. Due to the early start, it’s advisable to request a breakfast box from your hotel. The journey to El Alamein covers 259 km and takes about 3 hours. A coffee break is scheduled along the way for relaxation. El Alamein was a pivotal location during World War II, where the Axis powers aimed to control Egypt and the sea routes to Britain’s colonial empire. The town of Al Diffa witnessed significant battles, and upon arrival at 8:30 am, the historical importance of this area will be explored.
El Alamein War Museum - For those interested in war memorabilia, a visit to the El Alamein museum is highly recommended. Situated about 1 mile west of the British memorial, on the north side of the road, the museum was established in 1965 using battlefield debris. It boasts an impressive collection of uniforms, weapons, flags, and other war artifacts. Additionally, photographs and displays of the battle sites offer a unique insight into the region’s history. For anyone interested in World War II and the battles in this area, the El Alamein museum is a must-see during a trip to Egypt.
El Alamein War Cemetery - The El Alamein War Cemetery serves as a poignant reminder of the human cost of war. Designed by Sir Herbert Worthington, the cemetery is maintained by the British War Graves Commission in Cairo. It is the final resting place for 7,367 soldiers from Britain, New Zealand, Australia, South Africa, Greece, France, India, and Malaysia, each in individual graves. Additionally, 11,945 soldiers whose bodies were never found are commemorated in the cloister preceding the graveyard. The individual graves are marked with white markers, and approximately 815 soldiers have been identified, with their names inscribed on their graves. Visiting this cemetery is a moving experience and a fitting tribute to those who sacrificed their lives for their countries.
German War Memorial - Located three kilometers west of the Italian marker, the German war memorial is a solemn tribute to the German soldiers who lost their lives during World War II. The memorial is a single octagonal building, inspired by the Castle del Monte, and overlooks the sea. Built in 1959, it contains the remains of 4,280 German soldiers. At the entrance, there is an impressive golden mosaic, and to the right of the entrance is a small chapel where families and friends can honor the deceased with wreaths, photographs, and memorial ribbons. Visiting the German war memorial is a somber reminder of the human cost of war and an opportunity to pay respects to those who gave their lives.
Italian Memorial - The Italian Memorial at El Alamein is a striking structure, the largest at the site, located 5 kilometers beyond the German Memorial. Designed by Paolo Caccia Dominioni, who served at El Alamein and authored a book about it, the elegant white marble monument honors the 4,800 Italian soldiers, sailors, and airmen who perished during the war. Inside the entrance, visitors can explore a small museum, and in the chapel, the inscription reads: “To 4800 Italian soldiers, sailors, and airmen, the desert and the sea did not give back 38,000 who are missing.” The main memorial overlooks the sea, providing a peaceful and contemplative space to reflect on the sacrifices made during the war. A light lunch will be served on the way, and visitors can enjoy the sunset at Fatnas Lake, a beautiful spot in the Siwa Oasis.
