Serving as the seat of government and the residence of Egypt’s rulers for nearly 700 years, from the 13th century until the 19th century when Abdeen Palace was constructed, it occupies a strategic location on a promontory of the Mokattam hills, offering a commanding view over Cairo and dominating its skyline. At the time of its construction, it was one of the most impressive and ambitious military fortification projects.

The Citadel saw significant development beyond its initial Ayyubid-era construction initiated by Saladin in 1176, particularly during the Mamluk Sultanate, with major projects undertaken by Sultan al-Nasir Muhammad in the 14th century.
