Its strategic location on a promontory of the Mokattam hills near central Cairo offers a commanding view of the city and dominates its skyline. At the time of its construction, it was one of the most impressive and ambitious military fortification projects. Today, it is a preserved historic site featuring mosques and museums.

It is home to numerous Egyptian artisans and workshops producing traditional crafts and souvenirs. Originally, Khan el-Khalili referred to a single building in the area; now, it denotes the entire shopping district.
