It served as Egypt’s government seat and the residence of its rulers for nearly 700 years, from the 13th century until the 19th century when Abdeen Palace was constructed. Its strategic location on a promontory of the Mokattam hills near central Cairo offers a commanding view of the city and dominates its skyline. At the time of its construction, it was one of the most impressive and ambitious military fortification projects. Today, it is a preserved historic site featuring mosques and museums.

Established during the Mamluk era as a trade hub and named after one of its historic caravanserais, the bazaar district has become a major attraction for both tourists and locals. It is home to numerous Egyptian artisans and workshops producing traditional crafts and souvenirs. Originally, Khan el-Khalili referred to a single building in the area; now, it denotes the entire shopping district.
