Great Sunday afternoon - Me and my kids (16 & 9) had a great afternoon on Sunday at the prison tour with Dan as our guide. Dan is a fantastic guide, full of knowledge and was brilliant with my 9 year old daughter. He even got some smiles and laughs from my teenage son!! We all know what teenagers can be like. But honestly, Dan was brilliant, kept everything really relaxed, very insightful, he answered every question our group asked. There was only 7 of us in total. Would highly recommend the tour. Yes you can pay to go in and wander around on your own but why do that when you have a guide who can teach you things about the place. You guys should be proud to have Dan as an employee. The lady who was working in the shop was also incredibly polite and fun. Apologies, I didn't catch her name!

Extra expense but the guided tour worth it - Strongly recommend the guided tour (thanks Sarah). Building is cold so extra layers required. This is not ancient history and much still resonates today.

Extremely interesting, a must! - We really enjoyed our visit. We opted for the guided tour after reading previous reviews and we were not disappointed. There was just us on the tour, so we had Sarah our guide all to ourselves. She was very knowledgeable and we had great discussions during our tour. Extremely interesting and thought provoking experience, a must!

Fabulous Family Experience - Alex was a fabulous guide with exceptional knowledge. He shared both serious facts which really hit home, but balanced these perfectly with funny anecdotes which we all appreciated. We had children with us (12 & 13) and they really enjoyed their day and found it very interesting. Highly recommended. Thank you, Alex. Also, the ladies in the shop/entrance are fabulous. What a great team. Well done!!

Perfect dark heritage tour of a fascinating historical building. - Today we took the guided tour at Shrewsbury Prison and it was a fantastic experience from start to finish. Our tour guide, Alex, was excellent—clearly very knowledgeable and genuinely passionate about the history of the prison. He struck the perfect balance between informative and entertaining, bringing the stories to life with humour and real-life context that made everything easy to understand and engaging for all ages. What really stood out was how he handled more sensitive topics. He spoke with care and respect for the subject matter, while still being honest about the realities of prison life throughout history. It felt thoughtful and appropriate, without ever losing the impact of the stories. This is a tour I would particularly recommend for teenagers, its dark heritage captures the imagination with history, it really holds your attention throughout. All the staff we encountered were friendly and welcoming, which added to the overall positive experience. The café was also a nice surprise—the coffee was good and there was a decent menu to choose from. Highly recommended.
