Legend has it that in 1870, a prospector named Ambrosio Castillo discovered a gold nugget here, leading to the discovery of an entire vein. This attracted thousands of adventurers, giving rise to Real del Castillo, which, during the gold rush, became the capital of the then-territory of Baja California.
