The historic center is compact and intimate, easily explored on foot within a couple of hours. Giuseppe Garibaldi and his Thousand passed through Porta Garibaldi, one of the two historic gates still visible, along with Porta Nuova. Within the WWF-managed oriented nature reserve of the salt pans of Trapani and Paceco, which protects pink flamingos, lies the Salt Museum, offering insights into the world of salt farming. The lagoon, known as the Stagnone, is also a nature reserve where archaeology, history, nature, and trades converge.
