Setting Sail on the Atlantic

The sun was high in the sky as our group of thrill-seekers gathered at the dock in Estreito da Calheta, ready to embark on an adventure that promised both adrenaline and awe. As a former extreme sports athlete, I’ve chased thrills across the globe, but the idea of encountering wild cetaceans in their natural habitat was a new frontier. The anticipation was palpable as we boarded the RIB boat, a sleek vessel designed for speed and agility, perfect for the chase that lay ahead.

Our guides, seasoned experts with a passion for marine life, briefed us on what to expect. Their enthusiasm was infectious, and it was clear that this was more than just a job for them—it was a calling. As we set off, the wind whipped through my hair, and the salty spray of the Atlantic was a refreshing reminder of the untamed beauty that awaited us.

The Dance of Dolphins

The highlight of the tour came with a tip-off from our spotter on land: sperm whales had been sighted near Funchal. Our captain made the decision to pursue them, and we embarked on a longer journey than initially planned. The engine was cut well before we reached the whales, allowing us to drift silently and witness their approach without disturbing them.

As the massive creatures emerged from the depths, their presence was both humbling and awe-inspiring. Five sperm whales swam majestically past our Zodiac, their sheer size and grace a testament to the wonders of the natural world. It was a moment that transcended the adrenaline rush, leaving us in silent reverence of these gentle giants.

As we made our way back to Calheta, the sun began to set, casting a golden glow over the ocean.
