Travel through the small town of Berhale, where you might encounter long caravans heading to the salt mines and others leaving the Danakil with camels laden with salt. Upon reaching the campsite, unload the vehicle and take a brief rest. Afterward, drive to the Salt Lake to enjoy the stunning sunset.

Erta-Ale to Mekele

Erta Ale - Visit Erta Ale, a continuously active volcano with the world’s only permanent Lava Lake. Descend from Erta Ale to the base camp for breakfast. Proceed to Lake Afdera for a refreshing experience at the beautiful Salt Lake, where you can swim and unwind after the extensive treks in the Danakil Depression. After lunch, drive back to Mekele for an overnight stay at Atse Yohanis hotel or a similar accommodation.

This less-traveled route is wonderfully refreshing and showcases typical countryside settlements and landscapes. Along the way, visit Yimerehane Kirstos Church near Lalibela: a remarkable marble church constructed within a large cave, blending the architectural styles of the Axumite Kingdom and the Zagwe Dynasty.

Discovering Underground Rock-Hewn Churches

Church of St. George - Lalibela, often referred to as the “Jerusalem of Africa,” features incredible underground churches reminiscent of those in Israel. These extraordinary churches were carved from a single solid volcanic rock in the early 12th century. Spend the day exploring each one, visiting the Northwestern Cluster of churches - Bet Medhane Alem, Bet Maryam, Bet Meskel, Bet Danaghel, Bet Mikael & Bet Golgotha. After lunch, continue to the southeastern cluster, including Bete Gabriel & Rufael, Bete Merkorios, Bete Emanuel, Bete Libanos, and finally, the elegant church of Saint George, the large cross-shaped one. Conclude the day by enjoying cultural music and a traditional drink called Tej, a pure honey wine.

Mercato Market - Take a morning flight to arrive in Addis Ababa by midday, allowing free time for shopping or sightseeing, including a visit to the Merkato, reputed to be Africa’s largest market of its kind. In the evening, enjoy a farewell dinner at one of the renowned cultural restaurants.
