Mount Blue Sky Scenic Byway, previously known as Mount Evans, stretches 28 miles (45 km) and ascends over 7,000 feet (2,100 m) in elevation. Reaching a peak elevation of 14,130 feet (4,310 m), it holds the title of the highest paved road in North America. Initially, the Denver Mountain Parks system designed the road to connect Summit Lake Park and Echo Lake Park with their lower altitude parks in the foothills. The original plan had the road extending from Bergen Park near Evergreen to Echo Lake, and then to the summit, with the route from Echo Lake descending into Chicago Creek Canyon as a secondary branch.
