- Evora - This ancient city, recognized as a World Heritage Site, is a premier destination for cultural tourism in Portugal, showcasing architecture from various historical periods. Originally called “Ebora” by the Celts, it is renowned for having one of the best-preserved Roman monuments in Iberia. Its medieval streets offer a glimpse of what Lisbon looked like before the Great Earthquake of 1755.
- Templo Romano Évora - Évora’s most iconic landmark is among the best-preserved Roman monuments on the Iberian Peninsula. Constructed 2000 years ago, it was traditionally thought to be dedicated to Diana, the goddess of hunting, but scholars now believe it was actually dedicated to Emperor Augustus. Although it has lost its roof, the surrounding reflecting pool, and four of its 18 columns, one can easily imagine its original grandeur.
- Chapel of Bones (Évora) - This captivating and impressive display of human bones and skulls forms decorative patterns on walls and columns. It is the city’s most unforgettable sight and is part of a royal church from 1480, which is worth visiting even if the chapel of bones seems too morbid.
- Cathedral of Evora (Se Catedral de Evora) - Portugal’s largest medieval cathedral resembles a fortress, blending various architectural styles. It was here that the flags of Vasco da Gama’s ships were blessed before his voyage to India in 1497.
- Almendres Cromlech - Known as the “Portuguese Stonehenge,” it features nearly 100 oval boulders arranged in a circle, used for sacred rituals and astronomical observations. Predating the famous English monument by 2000 years, it is one of Europe’s largest and oldest prehistoric sites.
- Loios Convent - Built in 1485 as the private temple of a count and his family, it was also part of a convent and a 14th-century palace. The convent is now a hotel, and the palace remains inhabited by an aristocratic family, but the church is open to visitors.
- Giraldo Square Fountain - Évora’s main square is the city’s vibrant heart and an ideal starting point for exploring the World Heritage center. It hosts the tourist office and outdoor cafés, making it lively at any time of day. Surrounded by arcaded buildings and facing a Renaissance church that inspired others in the region, it leads to the city’s main shopping street or up to the Roman temple and cathedral.
- Misericordia Church - This small church with a simple façade conceals a stunning interior from the early 1700s, crafted by some of Portugal’s greatest baroque masters. It features a gold-covered altarpiece.
- Centro Historico de Evora - The historical town of Evora.
- Aqueduto da Agua de Prata - Designed by Francisco de Arruda, better known for Lisbon’s Tower of Belém, this aqueduct was completed in the 1530s to supply Évora with clean water.
