The Call of the Wild

The Arctic has always been a place of extremes, a land where the raw beauty of nature is both awe-inspiring and unforgiving. As a former Arctic researcher, I’ve spent countless hours studying the impact of climate change on these polar regions. But this time, I was not here to analyze data or measure ice thickness. I was here to experience the thrill of the Borealis Basecamp’s dogsled and reindeer tour, a journey that promised to connect me with the primal forces of the Arctic wilderness.

The journey began with a 45-minute drive north on the Elliott Highway, a route that cuts through the heart of the Boreal Forest. Our driver, Chris, was a lively character, his stories and insights making the drive feel like a prelude to the adventure that awaited us. As we arrived at the Basecamp, the crisp Arctic air filled my lungs, a reminder of the harsh yet invigorating environment I had come to love.

The Dance of the Sled Dogs

Meeting Ashley, our musher, was like meeting a kindred spirit. Her passion for her dogs was palpable, each one introduced with a story that highlighted their unique personalities. As she attached them to the sled, I could feel the anticipation in the air, a shared excitement between human and canine.

Our time at Borealis Basecamp was a reminder of the beauty and resilience of the Arctic. As we boarded the shuttle back to our hotel, I couldn’t help but feel grateful for the opportunity to witness the dance of life in one of the most extreme environments on Earth.
