Exploring Greek Orthodox and Greek parts of the city - Great opportunity to see less visited parts of Istanbul -- particularly the largely former Greek Orthodox and Jewish sections of the city. This is one of 2 tours done with Burak, who was superbly knowledgeable in both

Great tour with Salih - My wife and I wanted to see a different part of Istanbul so we took the Fener and Balat walking tour with Salih. He met us near the Spice Bazar and we used the tram to get to Fenner. We walked through the very hilly neighborhoods, got caught in a wedding procession and saw the Greek Orthodox church and the Bulgarian Iron church. Throughout the tour Salih explained about the history and culture of the area and the people who lived there. The history of the Patriarch of the Greek Orthodox Church (he lives next to the church) was particularly interesting. Then we took a short cut through a gap in the Theodosian (roman) walls to get to to the Jewish neighborhood of Balat. We really enjoyed the tour and the Salih's commentary. One caution is that there are some steep hills on this tour.

A hilly walk with fabulous scenery and detailed history - Omer was an excellent engaging guide; passionate about the quarter we explored. Delightful houses, some needing renovation. Narrow streets and lots of colourful stairs. Great artworks too. Very interesting architecture and thoroughly enjoyable. Thanks Omer

not to be missed - Walking through Fener and Balat means taking a journey back in time through picturesque alleys, colorful houses and authentic atmospheres that tell the multicultural history of Istanbul. These two neighborhoods, close together along the Golden Horn, were once inhabited by Greek, Armenian and Jewish communities, and still retain evident traces of that past. The uphill streets, adorned with brightly coloured buildings, offer picture-postcard views and invite you to stop and photograph every corner. There is no shortage of cozy cafes, small art galleries and vintage shops that give a lively soul to the neighborhood, making the walk pleasant and relaxed. One of the most fascinating spots is the Greek Orthodox Lyceum in Fener, an imposing red building that dominates the panorama, while in Balat stand out the ancient churches and synagogues that testify to the cultural richness of the area.. I was fascinated by this place and I recommend it, you can get there easily by taking the T1 bus and then the 55 g or other buses.

A very special guided walk - Quiet, understated descriptions and the explanations were clear and knowledgeable. In other words you don't get the often constant jabber that some guides offer. It was relaxed and allowed focus, interrogation and appreciation.

Don’t try visiting these areas by yourself- use a guide - Barak is a very astute guide who explained the history of the Greek and Jewish areas very well. His knowledge is beyond our expectation . This is a very worthwhile tour. We could not have learnt or enjoyed a visit without Barak
