Day 1: Journey Over Mountains and Into the Desert
Middle Atlas - Begin your day early and head south towards Merzouga. Your journey will take you over the Col du Zad pass (7,146 feet or 2,178 m) through the charming town of Ifrane and the cedar forests of the Middle Atlas Mountains. Look out for the local Barbary macaque monkeys before stopping for lunch in Midelt, known as the ‘apple city’, near the scenic Moulouya River. Continue over the Tizi n’Talremt pass into the Ziz Valley, famous for its hidden oases and clusters of palm trees. Along the way, you’ll notice many fortified houses called ksars, built to safeguard valuable goods like gold, salt, and spices.
Erg Chebbi - Proceed to Erfoud, renowned for its date festival and fossil mining. Here, you can visit a local cooperative to learn about the process and meet local artisans. Continue to Erg Chebbi, a vast expanse of sand dunes covering 13.5 square miles (35 square km). These enormous dunes shift and move with the changing winds! Upon reaching your luxury camp, enjoy a memorable camel ride to witness the breathtaking sunset and explore the enchanting golden Dunes of Erg Chebbi. Return to your camp to savor delicious local cuisine around an open fire, accompanied by live music and dancing under the stars. Your well-appointed luxury private Nomadic Style tent (without AC) will provide a memorable overnight stay in the heart of the Sahara Desert.
Day 2: Desert Towns, 1000 Kasbah Road, Lush Oases & Cinematic Landscapes
Merzouga Desert - Rise early to climb a nearby sand dune and catch the sunrise before trying your hand at sandboarding. After breakfast, travel through the Black Desert to Khamlia to experience a traditional Saharan village and the Gnaoua Music Vibes—its people originally hail from Mali.
Gargantas del Todra - Head west to pass through a dramatic gate into Rissani. This market town hosts a livestock auction and features a unique “donkey parking lot”, a sight worth seeing! Continue to the desert town of Tinerhir before reaching the Todra Gorge, which is 984 feet (300 m) deep. You’ll have time to explore the gorge and relax in the cool waters of the shallow Todra River.
Dades Gorges - Travel through the Valley of a Thousand Kasbahs (ancient fortresses). Although many kasbahs are now in disrepair, some local families still reside in them. You might even encounter nomads herding their animals. Continue your desert journey through Berber Villages to the Dades Valley to explore the unique rocky formations known as the “Monkey Fingers”, which appear to be a natural maze of layers. As you approach the Valley of the Kasbahs, you’ll see their orange-hued profiles in the sunset’s glow. Enjoy a delightful dinner while admiring the valley’s beauty. Spend the night in one of the kasbahs to fully experience the authentic landscape.
Day 3: Aït Benhaddou Kasbah, Tizi n’Tichka Pass Over High Atlas to Marrakech
Ait Ben Haddou - After a nutritious breakfast overlooking the Valley, head west to Kelâat M’Gouna. Known for its Roses’ Festival, this area features extensively cultivated farmland bordered by fragrant rose bushes. Continue west to Ouarzazate, a gateway to the Sahara Desert popularized by the film industry. Visit the Taourirt Kasbah, built in the 19th century and owned by the el Glaoui family, and take a studio tour to see how the nearby desert landscapes have been featured in many famous films. Proceed to Morocco’s most famous kasbah and a UNESCO World Heritage site, Aït Benhaddou, dating back to the 11th century when it was a key point along the trans-Saharan trade route. Explore the narrow streets and passageways of this traditional mud-brick city. From there, travel the winding road over the High Atlas Mountains.
Tizi n Tichka - Pause near the top of the Tizi n’Tichka Pass (7,415 feet or 2,260 m) to admire the view over the mountain range.
Stop at an Argan Oil Cooperative in Taddert to learn about Argan processing before descending the High Atlas and into the changing scenery.
Marrakech - Upon arriving in the Red City of Marrakech, where your journey concludes, settle into your hotel/Riad and spend the evening as you wish. Familiarize yourself with Marrakech’s main square, Jemaa el-Fna, to experience the vibrant atmosphere: musicians, performers, snake charmers, and bustling stalls. Grab a bite to eat or choose a nearby café to enjoy the show! Also, visit the 12th-century Koutoubia Mosque to its west. At 253 feet (77 m), the minaret is hard to miss. Wander through the attached gardens, adorned with fountains, pools, flowers, and palm trees.
