Out into the dessert…….plus snow! - We had a marvellous few days on our trip to Merzouga in the dessert from Fes. It was arranged at short notice, but worked really well. Hisham was our driver and guide for the trip, and he made certain that we were ok during the long journey, and that we had a good experience overall. Hisham recommended a good restaurant on the way down, & back and pointed out landmarks as we travelled. The Riad Azawad at Mergouza was excellent as were the staff. At Mergouza, Hisham took us to see some local musicians & then a car ride into the desert to visit a nomad camp. The camel ride to the camp and back was amazing. At the camp, the food was great, and we were entertained with traditional music. Hisham drove us back safely, with an unexpected diversion due to snow! Many thanks

Fez to the Desert and back - We did the Desert tour from Fez in mid October and really enjoyed it. It’s a good way to get out of the city and see more of Morocco. It’s a long drive there and back, and we did get a slightly cloudy night which made star gazing and watching the sunrise a little bit less dramatic but it is still lots of fun. We were picked up from our hotel at 8am and driven from Fez to the edge of the desert via a number of towns along the way, including Irfane (the Moroccan Switzerland). The car was big and comfortable with more than enough room for two of us and our bags. Our driver Amin was really friendly, welcoming and knowledgeable - throughout the three days he was always making sure we were having fun and he whatever we needed. Nothing was too much trouble for him. A Fez local, he was able to tell us lots about the city as well as about the places we stopped along the way. Although the drive to the desert is a long one (we left at 8am and arrived around 7pm) we could stop whenever we wanted, and there are lots of towns and photo opportunities along the way so the breaks made it more interesting and less arduous. Our hotel was right on the edge of the desert and was better than I expected. Large rooms, good showers, good food and friendly staff. The next day we did a walking tour of Rissani with a local guide as well as listening to some traditional African music. In the evening we were led into the desert on camels to our campsite. Again the campsite was far more plush than we expected. Electricity in all the tents, proper beds; showers and flushing toilets in the washrooms. After dinner and more music we walked into the dunes and looked at the stars. In general although we were in the desert we did not feel particularly remote. There are a lot of other campsites in the area and you can hear their music over the dunes. The camel ride was only an hour at walking pace but fun nonetheless. Some of the staff just drive to the dunes on 4x4s which does somewhat diminish the atmosphere but that can be overlooked. The following morning we woke up early to watch the sunrise which was great, even on a cloudy morning. Then it was back to the hotel for breakfast and the long drive back. Although not the main purpose of the trip it was great to see more of rural Morocco, away from the main tourist traps of the big cities. Even just watching through the car window you get a slightly better sense of what life is like for many Moroccans and the developments that are happening as buildings go up, internet cables are laid, new roads built. So overall a great few days. The trip itself is lots of fun, and our experience with Omega was great too. Great service and lots of happy memories.
