This university is not only the oldest higher education institution globally but also the first founded by a woman, and a Muslim woman at that. Fatima utilized her inheritance from her merchant father’s wealth to establish the university, which began as a madrasa and a mosque, eventually evolving into a center for higher education. It also pioneered the system of awarding degrees across various fields, including religious studies.
- Mellah Souk - The Jewish quarter of Fez, created in 1438 by Sultan Ar Rashid, is recognized as Morocco’s first official Jewish district, located just east of the royal palace. At its height, around 250,000 Jews resided in the area south of Bab Semmarine. Today, the few remaining have relocated to the Ville Nouvelle, but remnants of the community can still be seen in the architecture. The name “Mellah” comes from a salt marsh or the Oued Mellah (Salt River) in the area; now, every Jewish quarter in Morocco is referred to as a mellah. It is also a renowned location for filming numerous movies and TV shows, such as Indiana Jones.

Founded in 1325 by Sultan Abu Said, it was designed as an annex to the neighboring Al-Qarawiyyin Mosque, considered the world’s oldest university, built in 859 under Fatima al-Fihriya’s mandate. In the madrasa’s central courtyard, visitors can admire traditional motifs by the craftsmen of the Marinid Sultanate, of Berber origin, featuring stunning mosaics (Moroccan zellij).

Among these is Fondouk el-Nejjarine, an 18th-century roadside inn transformed into a museum dedicated to the wooden arts and crafts typical of Morocco.
