ITINERARY FOR THE WEEKEND OF MAY 17 - MAY 18, 2025

Fes Weekend: Discover the Overcast Charm and Blue City Wonders

Experience the overcast charm of Fes and the vibrant blue of Chefchaouen this weekend. With comfortable temperatures and no rain, it’s the perfect time to explore these culturally rich cities.

Embracing the Overcast Charm of Fes

As the sun rises over Fes, the city awakens under a blanket of clouds, casting a soft, diffused light over its ancient streets. The overcast skies create a unique atmosphere, perfect for exploring the rich tapestry of history and culture that Fes has to offer. The weather, with its mild temperatures ranging from 60.9°F to 86.3°F, invites you to wander through the city’s labyrinthine medina without the harsh glare of the sun.

Start your day with a leisurely stroll through the medina, where the scent of spices and the sound of artisans at work fill the air. The overcast skies provide a gentle backdrop to the vibrant colors of the souks, where you can find everything from handwoven textiles to intricate ceramics. As you navigate the narrow alleyways, take a moment to appreciate the architectural beauty of the city, from the ornate doorways to the intricate tilework that adorns many of the buildings.

The lack of direct sunlight allows for a more comfortable exploration of the city’s historical sites. Visit the Al Quaraouiyine University, one of the oldest universities in the world, and marvel at its stunning architecture. The overcast weather also provides the perfect lighting for photography, allowing you to capture the essence of Fes without the harsh shadows that often accompany sunny days.

A Journey to the Blue City

On the second day of your Fes adventure, embark on a day trip to the enchanting blue city of Chefchaouen. Nestled in the Rif Mountains, Chefchaouen is renowned for its picturesque blue-washed buildings, creating a dreamlike ambiance that captivates visitors. The journey from Fes to Chefchaouen takes approximately four hours, offering scenic vistas of rolling hills and lush valleys along the way.

Upon arrival, you’ll have the opportunity to explore the charming medina at your own pace. The city’s compact size makes it easy to navigate, allowing you to wander through its cobblestone streets and discover hidden gems around every corner. From the main square, Plaza Uta el-Hammam, to the Kasbah Museum and the Grand Mosque, Chefchaouen offers a wealth of cultural and historical experiences.

For those seeking a more leisurely experience, take a moment to relax at one of the local cafes, where you can savor traditional Moroccan dishes infused with local flavors. As you enjoy your meal, take in the panoramic views of the city from a rooftop terrace, where the blue hues of the buildings contrast beautifully with the surrounding landscape. Reflecting on the Journey

As your weekend in Fes comes to a close, take a moment to reflect on the experiences and memories you’ve gathered. The overcast charm of Fes, combined with the vibrant blue of Chefchaouen, offers a unique perspective on the beauty of Morocco. The mild weather and lack of precipitation make it an ideal time to explore the region, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in the culture and history of these remarkable cities.

Whether you’re wandering through the medina of Fes or exploring the blue streets of Chefchaouen, the journey offers a deeper connection to the places you visit. The cultural richness of Morocco is evident in every corner, from the bustling souks to the serene mountain landscapes. As you prepare to leave, carry with you the memories of a weekend well spent, and the promise of future adventures in this captivating country.

“Beautiful Blue City - With all the sights that Morocco has to offer, my partner and I were very interested in visiting the ‘Blue City’ of Chefchaouen. After looking at a few options, we decided to go with Happy Moroccan Tours. A driver picked us up from our riad and collected a few other members of the group to a car which then drove to another collection point to set off to Chefchaouen in a van. The drive was about 3 hours, though we did get a 20 minute break at a cafe for breakfast and coffee. Once we got outside the medina, the driver let us know where he would be waiting and gave us about 4 hours to explore. The medina is pretty compact compared to Fes, so it was easy to wander and navigate. Each twist and turn gave us a different blue pathway or doorway to photograph. There is enough time to stop and have lunch at one of the restaurants within the medina. The drive back took about 3 hours as well and we actually were dropped off at the Carrefour in the New City as requested, since that was on the way back. We thought it was a great day trip, though you will be spending more time in a car than you actually get in the city itself.” - Reviewed at 2023-12-15
