- Bou Inania Medersa - Hidden within the narrow streets of Fez are some exquisite treasures behind the façades! One such treasure is the Bou Inania Madrasa. A Medersa or Madrasa was once an Islamic school. A few decades ago, the brightest students were trained here to become jurists, imams, or other notables. Fortunately for tourists, these historic schools are no longer in use and can now be fully explored by travelers.
Visitors can admire the marvelous architecture and the beautiful interior of this stunning building. Mosaics illuminate the space with vibrant and subtle colors, while intricate woodcarvings transform the gates and other passages into precious works of art.
- Chouara Tannery - Approaching one of the tanneries in Fez, it’s impossible to miss. Leather goods sellers eagerly invite visitors to their rooftops, offering a splendid view of the colorful baths where leather hides are softened or dyed.
Of the two tanneries visited, Sidi Mussa (photo) comes highly recommended. Although it requires a bit of a walk from the Medina of Fez, it’s well worth the effort. Visitors enjoy a fantastic view of the hardworking artisans and receive guided tours in French, Spanish, Italian, or English about the work below. After pinching your nostrils on the rooftop—pigeon droppings are used to soften leather, sometimes creating unpleasant odors—you’ll receive another guided tour through a vast store filled with leather items. Not interested in purchasing a souvenir? A small tip is appreciated as a thank you for the tour and the incredible view.
- Fez Mellah - The Jewish quarter of Fez is just a step away from the ancient Medina, offering insight into the rich history of this vibrant city. The Bab Mellah in Fez was the first Jewish district in Morocco. After WWII, many residents relocated, but today, many Jews still live harmoniously with their Muslim neighbors.
Be sure to visit the Dahan Synagogue and the Jewish Cemetery (visible from the synagogue’s roof). It’s fascinating to see how the architecture of this community differs from the dominant Arab architecture and culture.
- Royal Palace of Fez - The Dar El Makhzen, or the Royal Palace of Fez, is situated directly opposite the Jewish neighborhood. It once served as a residence for the Sultan, later for government officials, and today, the Moroccan king frequently visits these rooms.
Unfortunately, visitors cannot enter the palace, but it remains spectacular from the outside! The richly decorated Moorish gate is particularly captivating. Don’t forget your selfie stick!
- Jardin Jnan Sbil - Just outside the Medina lies a hidden paradise. The Jnan Sbil Gardens are a peaceful oasis in the bustling city of Fez. This park is beautifully adorned with colorful flowers, majestic palm trees, and a diverse collection of cacti and other tropical plants.
The highlight of this impressive park is the main square, where visitors can relax and unwind. Picking oranges, standing on the grass, or cooling off with the refreshing water is prohibited! The vigilant park overseers are quick to enforce the rules with a sharp whistle.
- Souk el Henna - The medina of Fez is believed to be Morocco’s largest. It’s a vast maze of endless streets, ranging from narrow to wide, leading to charming squares or dark cul-de-sacs. The medina is an attraction in itself, and the best way to experience it is by spending a few hours getting lost in the labyrinth of alleys.
Every few steps, visitors are left in awe. The medina is truly captivating!
- Marinid Tombs - Fez is enormous, and the true scale of this city of millions is best appreciated from a high vantage point. This can be done from a hotel or Riad rooftop terrace, but for the most breathtaking view, head to the hills just behind the city. Near the Gare Routière (central bus station), visitors can enjoy the most stunning views of the imperial city!
Fez is beautiful during the day, but at sunset, this Moroccan gem becomes even more enchanting!
