• Firostefani - Situated to the north of Fira, Firostefani was once a separate settlement but is now part of the capital. Its name translates to “The Crown of Fira,” reflecting its location at the highest point of Fira. Firostefani offers stunning views of the capital, the sea, and the volcano. This traditional village features a few charming restaurants, cafes, some shops, and a mini market. It also boasts some of Santorini’s most impressive hotels and traditional rooms, where visitors can enjoy a blend of tranquility and vibrant nightlife.
• Oia - Oia, frequently mentioned in travel reports, is a picturesque village on the northwest edge of Santorini island. It stretches nearly 2 km (1.2 miles) along the northern edge of the Caldera, at an elevation of 70 to 100 meters (230 to 330 feet) above sea level. Built on the steep Caldera slope, its houses and restaurants are nestled into niches carved into the Caldera on the seaward side. There are 300 steps leading down to the port from Oia. The village features narrow passageways and a central square, surrounded by a complex of whitewashed, blue-domed churches and charming traditional Cycladic houses. It offers excellent sunset views over the Caldera.
• Megalochori - Traditional Village - Megalochori is a serene traditional village in Santorini, known for its stone cobbled streets. Located 9 km southwest of Fira, it has about 300 permanent residents. Spending an evening here is worthwhile to admire unique buildings like neoclassical houses, stately homes, and old cave houses with solid wooden doors and high fences, once used for protection against pirates. Another highlight of Megalochori is the elaborate steeples of its impressive churches, two of which are in the village center. The village is renowned for its vineyards and wineries. There are also two secluded beaches on the Caldera side, named after local churches, Plaka and Thermi beach, accessible only on foot or by boat. Traditional taverns and cafes offer local dishes under the natural shade of trees.

• Akrotiri Archaeological Site - For history enthusiasts, this is a must-visit. The Ancient City of Akrotiri is one of the most significant prehistoric settlements of the Aegean, with the island’s first civilization dating back to 4500 BC. A major volcanic eruption occurred 3650 years ago, covering everything in volcanic rocks and ashes. The town spanned 200 acres, with only 5% excavated so far. At the Akrotiri archaeological site, visitors can explore the well-preserved prehistoric city, which features frescoes and impressive mural paintings.
• Perissa Black Sand Beach - Located on the island’s southern coast, the Black Sand Beach comprises two consecutive beaches, Perissa Beach and Perivolos Beach, forming the long Black Beach. The beach’s surface consists of black volcanic sand and pebbles, giving it its name. Known for its lively beach bars, the inviting atmosphere, combined with numerous bars and restaurants, makes it a vibrant spot. There are also plenty of facilities and water sports like windsurfing, canoeing, and a diving center. Visitors can enjoy an hour at the Black Beach for swimming and lunch at a seaside restaurant.
• Monastery of Profitis Ilias - Situated less than five kilometers (3.1 miles) from the village of Pyrgos, the mountain of Profitis Ilias is the island’s highest point, standing 567 meters above sea level. At its summit is the Monastery of Profitis Ilias (or Prophet Elias), one of the island’s oldest and most important Orthodox landmarks. Founded in 1711 by monks Gabriel and Ioakeim, it was built in a fortress style. From 1806 to 1845, it operated a school where Greek language and literature were taught. Today, the Monastery houses a museum with rare ecclesiastical books, Byzantine icons, and sculptures. This tranquil place invites visitors to stay longer, explore the chapel, and enjoy the impressive gardens. Over 700 olive trees enhance the panoramic views.
• Red Beach - The Red Beach is a stunning natural creation by the volcano and is the most popular beach on the island. Located in the southeastern part of the island, in the Akrotiri area, it is about 8 km from Fira. The sand is composed of black and red pulverized volcanic rock. Nature continues to shape this artwork, as salt, sun, rainwater, and wind constantly mold the impressive cliffs, giving them new forms. To reach the beach, visitors can walk a short downhill path or access it by boat from Akrotiri port, Kamari, or Perissa. Despite a ban due to frequent landslides, those who visit do so at their own risk. Don’t miss this unique landscape!
• Akrotiri Lighthouse - In the traditional village of Akrotiri stands the Santorini Lighthouse, built in 1892 by a French company and among Greece’s oldest. It ceased operation during WWII but was restored by the Greek Navy in 1945. The square tower rises 10 meters above the keeper’s house. Before electricity in 1988, it ran on petrol. Today, it emits a white light every 20 seconds, visible up to 24 nautical miles. While access is restricted to Greek Navy personnel, visitors can enjoy the surrounding trails, breathtaking sea views, and a romantic sunset. The serene atmosphere beautifully contrasts with nature’s raw power.
• Akrotiri Archaeological Site - The Akrotiri Archaeological Site, located 15 km south of Fira, is built on a hillside and has 489 permanent residents (2011 census). Known as the “Greek Pompeii,” Akrotiri thrived during the Middle Cycladic Period (20th–17th centuries BC) as a major urban center and port of the Aegean. Excavations began in 1967 under Spyridon Marinatos to explore his theory that the Thera eruption caused the collapse of the Minoan Civilization. Since his passing in 1974, Professor Christos Doumas has continued the work with significant findings. Visiting Akrotiri offers a unique blend of history, education, and tourism, with the Red Beach nearby.
• Castelli of Emporio - Emporio, also known as Nimborios, is one of Santorini’s most beautiful castelli. Located 12 km from Fira, the community of Emporio has 3,085 permanent inhabitants (2011 census). The best-preserved castle of Santorini is here, with houses built side by side, forming the castle’s walls. The interior of this fortified settlement is full of curves. Inside the castle is the church of Palia Panagia or Panagia Mesani, featuring an impressive steeple, an old woodcarving temple, and a pebbled floor. Emporio also boasts the old Goulas Castle and several churches, such as Saint Nicholas Marmaritis.
• Castelli of Pyrgos - Pyrgos Kallistis, or simply Pyrgos, is a village with a population of 912 (2011 census) and is situated approximately 7 km from the island’s capital, Fira. It is located at the island’s highest point. Atop this hill are the ruins of a Venetian Castle (Kasteli), once the island’s administrative center. At an altitude of 360 meters, its castle is the highest on the island, offering magnificent views of Santorini in nearly all directions. Here, life moves at a more relaxed pace; visitors can stroll through the alleys away from the bustling tourist areas of the Caldera villages. Pyrgos exudes a discreet charm and is a typical example of medieval architecture with narrow streets, fortified walls, hidden passages, and traditional churches.
• Tomato Industrial Museum, D.Nomikos - Located on Vlychada Beach in Santorini, surrounded by striking volcanic formations, the Tomato Industrial Museum “D.
