Exploring Firgas: A Rainforest Adventure in Gran Canaria

Drawn by the allure of Gran Canaria’s lush landscapes, I embarked on a rainforest tour in Firgas. Join me as I explore the island’s rich ecological and cultural heritage, from the historic town of Firgas to the enchanting Azuaje Ravine and a sustainable farm. This journey is a celebration of nature’s beauty and the importance of conservation.

A Journey Through Firgas: The City of Water

The day began with a sense of anticipation as I was picked up by Angelica, our guide for the day, from my hotel in Playa Del Ingles. As we drove north, the landscape transformed dramatically, and the weather shifted from sunny to a refreshing drizzle. Our first stop was the charming town of Firgas, known as the “City of Water.” Nestled in the mountains, Firgas is a testament to Gran Canaria’s historical connection to water resources. The town’s picturesque streets and ancient water mills offered a glimpse into the island’s past, and I couldn’t help but feel a deep appreciation for the intricate relationship between the local culture and the natural environment.

As we wandered through the town, the rain added a mystical quality to the experience. I took the opportunity to purchase a poncho, a necessary addition to my attire given the weather. The brief stop allowed us to stretch our legs, grab a warm drink, and prepare for the adventure ahead. The air was filled with excitement as Angelica shared stories about the Canary Islands, setting the stage for the day’s exploration.

Into the Heart of the Rainforest

Our journey continued to the Azuaje Ravine, a remnant of the ancient Doramas Forest. The ravine is a sanctuary of biodiversity, home to a variety of endemic flora and fauna. As a biologist, I was thrilled to explore this rare ecosystem. The recent storm had left its mark, with fallen trees creating natural obstacles that added an element of adventure to our trek. Crossing streams on makeshift bridges of tree branches and scrambling over rocky terrain, I felt a profound connection to the wild beauty surrounding us.

The highlight of the hike was reaching a small, enchanting waterfall. The sound of cascading water was a soothing backdrop as Angelica shared insights into the unique plant species that thrive in this environment. The laurel forest, with its lush greenery and pristine streams, is a living reminder of Gran Canaria’s lush natural past. As we made our way back, I couldn’t help but reflect on the importance of preserving such precious ecosystems for future generations.

A Taste of Sustainability

Our next stop was Ecofinca Ventana Verde, a sustainable farm that embodies the principles of ecological farming. Here, we enjoyed a delightful lunch made entirely from farm-sourced ingredients. The simplicity of fresh tomatoes, avocados, cheese, and olive oil transformed into a gourmet experience, highlighting the flavors of the island. Sharing this meal with fellow travelers was a wonderful opportunity to connect and exchange stories.

After lunch, we toured the farm, learning about the eco-friendly practices that sustain it. The dedication to sustainability resonated deeply with me, reinforcing the importance of supporting local agriculture and reducing our environmental footprint. The farm’s commitment to harmony with nature was inspiring, and I left with a renewed sense of purpose in my own conservation efforts.

Our final destination was the natural pools of El Puertillo, where we hoped to swim in the volcanic rock pools. Unfortunately, the winter waves were too strong, and the pools were closed for safety. Despite this, the coastal views were breathtaking, and the experience served as a reminder of nature’s unpredictable beauty. As we headed back, I felt grateful for the day’s adventures and the opportunity to immerse myself in the rich ecological and cultural heritage of Gran Canaria.

This Rainforest Tour was more than just a tour; it was a journey into the heart of an island that holds a special place in my heart. I left with a deeper understanding of the delicate balance between human activity and nature, and a renewed commitment to advocating for the preservation of our planet’s precious ecosystems.
