- Mercato Centrale - Florence’s initial significant marketplace, now referred to as the Mercato Vecchio or “Old Market,” was demolished during the city’s mid-nineteenth-century renovations. The Central Market’s building was crafted by Giuseppe Mengoni, an Italian architect renowned for the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, a grand arcade in Milan named after the King of Italy.
- Museo di San Marco - This religious complex underwent renovation in the fifteenth century, funded by the Medici family. The current monastery is situated on the site of a Benedictine monastery dating back to the 12th century. Designed by the esteemed Florentine architect Michelozzo, a close associate of Cosimo the Elder, the Medici family head, Michelozzo even created a special cell in San Marco for Cosimo’s personal retreat.
- Galleria dell’Accademia - Established in 1784, this institution was founded when the Grand Duke of Tuscany decided to consolidate all art schools in Florence into one location. While the Accademia showcases works by various Renaissance artists, its most renowned piece is Michelangelo’s statue of David.
- Piazza della Signoria - Named after the Palazzo della Signoria, or town hall, the Signoria served as the governing body of the Florentine Republic. The palazzo is on the left when entering the square from Via dei Gondi. Florence’s town hall was built in 1299 by Arnolfo di Cambio, the same architect responsible for the cathedral. Cambio’s façade remains unchanged, although the elegant marble frieze above the entrance was added in 1528.
- Ponte Vecchio - This is the narrowest section of the river, with a bridge existing here since Roman times in the 1st century A.D. The original bridge was destroyed by a flood in 1117, rebuilt, and then destroyed again in 1333. The current bridge was constructed in 1345, with a tower added at the southeast corner to defend the bridge during city attacks.
- Basilica of Santa Croce - Likely designed by Arnolfo di Cambio in 1295, the current church stands on the site of the original oratory built by the first Franciscan friars to arrive in Florence. The basilica features a Tau Cross floorplan, resembling the capital letter “T,” a traditional emblem of Saint Francis. The church’s vast, austere interior reflects Franciscan aesthetics, with an open timber roof and a single, wide nave leading to the altar.
