Piazza del Duomo - The Cupola, designed and constructed by Filippo Brunelleschi, features narrow corridors for ascending and descending. This design was originally intended for the cathedral’s maintenance workers and was not meant for public access.
Inside the dome, you can admire Giorgio Vasari’s frescoes of the Last Judgment (1572-9) up close, with an engaging explanation of the frescoes as you ascend to the top. Looking down, just above the drum, you’ll notice where Baccio D’Angelo began adding a balcony in 1507, with one of the eight sides left unfinished, and to this day, the other seven sides remain in rough brick!
Upon reaching the top of the Cupola, you will be captivated by the panoramic view of Florence spread out before you.
