- The Baptistery of St. John - Start your exclusive tour in the vibrant Piazza del Duomo in Florence, where a knowledgeable guide will introduce the historical and architectural importance of this sacred area. Stroll around the square to admire the magnificent Florence Cathedral (Santa Maria del Fiore) from all perspectives. Then, enter the Baptistery of St. John, one of Florence’s oldest structures. Here, the guide will explain the history of its octagonal design and the significance of its exquisite golden mosaic ceiling. Appreciate the famous bronze doors by Lorenzo Ghiberti, which Michelangelo famously called the “Gates of Paradise.” As you admire these masterpieces, the guide will share fascinating stories about their creation and symbolism, enhancing your appreciation of the craftsmanship that characterizes Florence’s medieval and Renaissance art.
- Opera del Duomo Museum - Continue your exploration at the nearby Duomo Museum (Museo dell’Opera del Duomo), a rich collection of over 700 sacred and artistic works spanning centuries. The guide will highlight key pieces, including Michelangelo’s poignant Pietà Bandini, reflecting the artist’s profound emotional connection to his later works. Be amazed by the original Gates of Paradise, meticulously restored and preserved in the museum, and Donatello’s deeply expressive sculptures. You’ll also see the original wooden models and scaffolding used in the construction of Brunelleschi’s Dome, an engineering marvel of its era. This museum visit weaves together the story of how the Duomo Complex was constructed, adorned, and preserved, offering a deeper understanding of its historical importance and the remarkable artistic talent involved.
- Piazza del Duomo - As the guided tour concludes, the guide will lead you to the entrance of Brunelleschi’s Cupola, where your pre-booked timed ticket grants access. Ascend the 463 narrow steps, originally used by maintenance workers—there’s no elevator—to experience the cathedral’s dome like never before. Along the way, get a close look at Vasari’s stunning Last Judgment frescoes and learn about their dramatic symbolism and artistic techniques. Near the top, the guide will discuss the intriguing history of the balcony started by Baccio D’Agnolo in 1507, with only one of eight sides ever completed. At the peak, enjoy the 360° panoramic views of Florence. Afterwards, continue exploring the Duomo Complex at your leisure: visit the beautiful interior of Santa Maria del Fiore Cathedral, descend into the ancient remains of Santa Reparata, and—if desired—climb Giotto’s Bell Tower for another unforgettable view.
