- Piazza della Repubblica - This is one of Florence’s largest squares and has been the city’s heart since Roman times. At its center stands the Column of Abundance, symbolizing the city’s core and marking the intersection of the ancient Roman streets, the Cardo and the Decumanus. The square is home to some of Florence’s most prestigious shops and clubs, including the “Giubbe Rosse,” a historic gathering place for writers and intellectuals.
- Piazza della Signoria - The site of Piazza della Signoria has always held great significance for the city.
During the Middle Ages, the area featured a baptistery, an early Christian basilica, and a building used as a prison where Palazzo Vecchio now stands. In the 10th century, as towers rose throughout the city, old structures were either dismantled for their stones or integrated into new buildings. In Piazza della Signoria, the Palazzo dei Priori was constructed near the towers of the Ghibelline Uberti family.
Today, this magnificent square offers views of Palazzo della Signoria and numerous statues commemorating Florence’s most significant events.
- Ponte Vecchio - This is the oldest and most renowned bridge in Florence, spanning the Arno at its narrowest point. The Romans built a wooden bridge here in the 1st century. In 1565, architect Giorgio Vasari, under Cosimo I’s orders, constructed the “Vasari Corridor.” This remarkable Corridor, completed in just five months, is an elevated passage about a kilometer long, linking Palazzo Vecchio, the city’s political hub, with Palazzo Pitti, the Medici residence at the time, passing through the Uffizi Gallery, the Lungarno Archibusieri, the shops on the eastern side of the Ponte Vecchio, and around the top of the Mannelli tower.
- Piazza del Duomo - Piazza del Duomo is the epitome of Florence’s Renaissance legacy, blending art, architecture, and religious importance in one location. Whether admiring the architecture, delving into its history, or simply enjoying the atmosphere, it is an essential stop on any Florence itinerary.
