Campanile di Giotto - Adjacent to Florence’s Cathedral, Giotto’s Bell Tower is a stunning example of Gothic architecture in Italy. Designed by Giotto di Bondone in 1334, this 84-meter-high tower is adorned with vibrant marble, sculptural panels, and statues. Although Giotto passed away before its completion, Andrea Pisano and later Francesco Talenti continued the work. Visitors can ascend 414 steps to enjoy one of the finest panoramic views of Florence, including a unique angle of Brunelleschi’s Dome. The tower, elegant and harmonious, epitomizes Florence’s artistic brilliance in the 14th century.
-
Battistero di San Giovanni - The Baptistery of San Giovanni, one of Florence’s oldest monuments, is located in Piazza del Duomo opposite the Cathedral. Its octagonal shape and white-green marble façade highlight the Florentine Romanesque style. Inside, the golden mosaic ceiling depicts the Last Judgment, while its bronze doors, notably Ghiberti’s “Gates of Paradise,” tell biblical stories. Once the city’s primary baptismal site, where Dante was baptized, it remains a symbol of Florence’s art and faith.
-
Crypt of Santa Reparata - The remnants of the ancient Basilica of Santa Reparata are accessible to the public on an archaeological trail beneath the cathedral floor. Here, visitors can admire exquisite Paleo-Christian mosaics and refined tombstones.
-
Museo dell’Opera del Duomo - The Opera del Duomo Museum showcases a collection of over 700 masterpieces from the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, including Michelangelo’s Pietà Bandini, Giotto’s Madonna of All Saints, and Lorenzo Ghiberti’s Gates of Paradise.
-
Duomo - Cattedrale di Santa Maria del Fiore - The Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, commonly known as the Florence Duomo, is the spiritual center of the city and a marvel of Gothic and Renaissance architecture. Construction began in 1296 and spanned over 140 years, culminating in the iconic Brunelleschi’s Dome. The cathedral’s richly adorned façade, crafted from white, green, and pink marble, is a prominent feature of Florence’s skyline. Inside, visitors can admire remarkable frescoes, including Vasari’s Last Judgment beneath the dome. As one of the largest churches globally, the Duomo embodies the artistic and religious essence of Florence and remains a symbol of its illustrious history.
