- Ruins of Uaxactun - UAXACTUN: Historically known as Siaan Ka’an, meaning Born from Heaven, this city was inhabited from the Middle Preclassic period around 900 BC through the entire Classic period, reaching its peak from 500 AD to 900 AD.
The earliest record is from 328 AD on Stela 9, and the latest is from 899 AD on Stela 12, indicating it had the longest occupation in Petén. It was once considered the oldest city until the discovery of Nakbé and El Mirador to the northwest, which date back to the Early Preclassic period (1000 BC - 200 BC).
Like many other Classic cities, Uaxactún was abandoned in the early 10th century and was overtaken by the jungle until its rediscovery in 1916 by Silvanus Morley during the administration of Mr. Manuel Estrada Cabrera. Uaxactún was pivotal in laying the groundwork for Mayan Civilization research, with detailed studies primarily conducted by the Carnegie Institution of Washington. Excavations by John Lloyd Stephens and Frederick Catherwood popularized the Mayan Culture worldwide.
