Safari at Fathala Reserve + Optional Lion Walk
Fathala Reserve - 06:30 – After enjoying breakfast, the journey begins with a drive to the Banjul ferry to catch the next ferry to Barra. The trip continues towards the borders for immigration procedures (please remember to bring your passport and yellow fever certificates). Upon arrival at the Fathala Nature Reserve, which spans 2,000 acres of natural habitat, visitors are welcomed into a sanctuary where numerous African wildlife species reside. In specially designed vehicles, guests can follow animal trails through the wilderness to observe the diverse species inhabiting the area.
In just one day, visitors might spot giraffes, rhinos, giant elands, zebras, antelopes, pythons, and buffaloes, among others. How fortunate will you be? This is a fantastic opportunity to capture memories of Africa, so don’t forget your cameras—this might be your only chance to take some incredible photos! During the day, lunch will be served in the wild, and drinks are available for purchase at the park. Guests will learn about the area’s history and the exciting plans for its future. Be part of an unforgettable African experience! An optional Lion Walk, lasting about 30 minutes, is available for those who dare to participate at an additional cost of approximately €35.00 per person.
From Fathala, the journey continues to Keur Saloum Hotel for relaxation and an evening exploration of the Saloum Delta to visit the bird dormitory.
Dinner and overnight stay at the hotel.
Janjangbureh
Janjanbureh - 07:00 am - After breakfast, the journey resumes with a drive to cross the border back into the Gambia, continuing through North Bank to visit the Wassu Stone Circles, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The Wassu Stone Circles are believed to be ancient ceremonial burial mounds for kings and chiefs, dating back over 1,200 years to between 750-1000 AD. There are several circles across the Senegambia region, sharing historical aspects with other stone circles in Europe.
The journey proceeds to Kuntaur to board a local river craft for a 2-3 hour relaxing cruise along the River Gambia, passing lush forest islands. Keep an eye out for hippos, crocodiles, baboons, monkeys, colorful birds, and chimpanzees. The cruise around River Gambia National Park (RGNP) is a must-see exploration while in the Gambia. A park ranger will join the group onboard to guide the exploration in search of the rare chimpanzees, providing insights into the park’s management before returning to Kuntaur for the evening drive to Janjangbureh. (Please note: Chimpanzees are kept on islands, and visitors are only allowed to sail around them.)
Dinner and overnight stay at Baobolong Annex.
